South Carolina Arts Commission News October 2010
Hello everyone,

We're pleased to announce a new partnership with S.C. Parks, Recreation and Tourism that will open new avenues for promoting arts and cultural activities as part of our state's tourism marketing. The idea of E-Arts has evolved over time and now emerges as a cost-effective way for us to promote S.C. arts events to interested potential visitors. Later this year we'll offer workshops about how arts organizations and artists can tap into this new opportunity.

In August, longtime Commission member Linda Stern stepped down after 10 years of service. Linda has been one of our most vocal advocates, traveling the state to speak with legislators and community and business leaders about the value of the arts. In addition to serving as chairman for six years, Linda led the way in shaping creative partnerships between our public agency and private and corporate arts patrons. Two examples come to mind: By developing the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards Luncheon and Art Sale, Linda helped raise significant funds to support artists and arts activities around the state. She also chaired the "Driven by the Arts" license plate project that promotes awareness and raises money for arts in education programs. We salute her decade of selfless service and wish her well as she moves on to her next adventure. Luckily for us, she'll remain a member of the S.C. Arts Foundation board.

Sincerely,

Ken May
Executive Director

E-Arts program targeted to tourists

The S.C. Arts Commission and S.C. Parks, Recreation and Tourism have joined forces to launch E-Arts, an online resource developed to encourage vacationers and visitors to explore S.C.'s arts and culture. An electronic newsletter packaged with a web page, E-Arts links the arts community to tourism promotion and provides a new marketing vehicle for arts activities. The first issue of E-Arts was distributed Sept. 21 to more than 3,500 subscribers who expressed an interest in our state's arts and culture. In the future, the newsletter will include advertisements by arts organizations and their marketing partners.

How can my arts activities be included?
Later this year, arts organizations will be able to apply for inclusion in E-Arts. Eligible organizations are those that have documented success in attracting tourists. Organizations must also meet accessibility and DHEC standards and other criteria. E-Arts content is pulled from Arts Daily and other sources, so add your events to Arts Daily and you'll be on the E-Arts radar! Stay tuned for more information.

For more information about E-Arts, contact Joy Young, (803) 734-8203.

Verner award nominations due Dec. 15

They're heavy and fondly referred to as "the ladies." "They" are the lovely bronze statues designed by artist Jean McWhorter and presented to recipients of the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Governor's Awards, the state's highest awards in the arts. Do you know an individual, organization or business deserving of a lady?

Nominations for the 2011 Verner Awards are due Dec. 15, 2010. T
he business nominee guidelines have been updated to expand and clarify qualifying activities.

The six nomination categories are: arts in education, government, organization, business/foundation, individual and individual artist. Nomination guidelines and the form are available on the website.

Stay tuned for details about the awards ceremony and other activities to be held in May 2011. For more information about the nominations process, contact Rusty Sox, (803) 734-8899.

Local arts agency leaders: take a day off

Sometimes the daily grind feels like a battlefield. Don't wave the white flag just yet - retreat for one day to reconnect with peers and refocus on what keeps you going. The S.C. Arts Commission and the S.C. Arts Alliance invite local arts agency executive directors to a one-day retreat Weds., Oct. 20 from 9:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. at the Arts Commission.

A local arts agency is defined as a public or private not-for-profit organization or agency, whose primary purpose is to provide a support system and network to develop, deliver and sustain arts activities in the community. Visit the local arts agencies blog for details. Contact Susan DuPlessis, (803) 734-8693, if you wish to receive an invitation to the retreat.
Are you new at what you do?

Have you recently joined your arts organization or moved into a new role? If so, you're invited to a meeting at the S.C. Arts Commission on Oct. 27. The session is designed to give new staff working in arts administration, development, finance and marketing/communications an overview of how the Arts Commission works. Board members who have assumed staff roles are also welcome. Arts Commission staff will answer questions and share organization-specific grants history. The session begins at 9 a.m. and adjourns for lunch on your own. Registration is free but limited to 25 participants. To register or find out more, contact Susan DuPlessis, (803) 734-8693.

This month's emergency "Prep Step"

October is National Fire Prevention Month. Are you and your organization prepared if a fire breaks out? This month's Emergency Prep Step is about fire prevention and safety -- here's one easy thing you can do to be better prepared for an emergency.

Make an appointment with your local fire department for a walk-through inspection of your facility, studio or work space. Most local departments are happy to do this at no charge! A fire official can spot potential risks and make suggestions for easy changes that will help keep you, your art or your business hazard-free. Check out our website for more suggestions and information on emergency preparedness and the arts.
