Mary Whyte featured on CBS news

For the last three-and-a-half years, Mary Whyte has been traveling around the South painting its endangered species: holdouts whose way of life is disappearing.

"It's always because there's a story that I think needs to be told, that all of these people are living a life that I think is unique and important," she explained.

See the complete story on the CBS News website, and visit the Coleman Fine Arts website to learn more about the artist.

The exhibit "Mary Whyte: Working South" will open March 2, 2011 and run through October 2, 2011 at the Greenville County Museum of Art

Mindy Friddle wins a novel prize
Mindy Friddle
Mindy's second novel, Secret Keepers, has won the 2009 Willie Morris Award for Southern Fiction, which includes an expense paid-trip to New York City in October and a luncheon and reception at the NY Yacht Club.  Mindy lives in Greenville and finds inspiration in nature by taking long walks in the woods with her dog, Otto.  Find out more about Mindy on her website.

2010 S.C. Arts Commission Fellows

September 2010
Y'all, it's busy in these parts! We almost didn't get this puppy out this month!

Over the past several weeks I've talked with dozens of you about your projects and plans as you prepare your Artists' Ventures grant applications.  That's meant back-to-back phone calls and evenings spent answering email , but it's seriously exciting stuff. I look forward to seeing it all come to fruition, with our without grant support.  If you are planning to apply and haven't contacted me yet, please do so as soon as possible.  As soon as we have this deadline under our belt we'll be releasing exciting information about our next round of professional development courses!

I'd like to make sure that those of you who like working with young people know about the S.C. Arts Commission's new Innovative Partnership grant program.  It's a great opportunity to do long-term work with a school or group of students, helping them grow socially and creatively.  The deadline is January 15, so now is the time to start reaching out to schools in your community.

Finally, a VERY important deadline is October 2.  October 2 is the last day to register to vote in the November elections.  In November, South Carolinians will choose, among other offices, our next governor and superintendent of education.  Both of these roles will have an effect on the future of arts support and arts education in our state, and I encourage you to familiarize yourself with the stance of each candidate and make sure you vote in November. If you need to register, follow the link below.

And keep in touch!

Miss the deadline and you lose your chance to vote for Governor, Superintendent of Education, and more!

Several artists named MacArthur "Genius" Fellows

Almost half of the 2010 MacArthur Fellows are artists! The MacArthur Fellows Program awards unrestricted fellowships to talented individuals who have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity for self-direction. There are three criteria for selection of Fellows: exceptional creativity, promise for important future advances based on a track record of significant accomplishment, and potential for the fellowship to facilitate subsequent creative work.  What do they get for being so amazing?  Learn more!

The South Carolina Arts Commission is the state agency charged with creating a thriving arts environment that benefits all South Carolinians, regardless of their location or circumstances. Created by the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the Arts Commission works to
