South Carolina Arts Commission News
July 2010
|
Hello everyone,
Executive Director Ken May
 | During our Canvas of the People tour, we heard a variety of ideas - some
unique to certain communities and some common everywhere we visited.
One of the
recurring themes was the need to ensure that the arts are available to everyone, regardless of geographical location, income, educational level, race, abilities or access to technology. As we continue to process input from the Canvas, I'm pleased
to announce that our state is out front in working to erase the accessibility
divide as it relates to the arts. VSA-South Carolina was recently recognized
with an award for excellence in educational programming by VSA International, a
nonprofit organization founded more than 35 years ago to create a society where
people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.
The
S.C. Arts Commission is one of several partners supporting the VSA-South
Carolina affiliate and its mission to promote quality and accessible art
experiences for people with all types of disabilities throughout our state. Our
affiliate, with one staff member -- director Julia Brown -- was recognized over many other
state affiliates with larger staffs and budgets. As our nation celebrates the 20th
anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we in South
Carolina can take pride in our progress while pledging to continue working to make the arts accessible to all citizens.
Sincerely,
Ken May Executive Director |

Emergency planning one step at a time
Sometimes a large task is more easily accomplished when it's broken
down into smaller pieces. Here's one easy thing you can do THIS WEEK to make headway in being better prepared for any kind of emergency: make an
up-to-date contact list of staff, volunteers, board members and others who
might need to reach each other in an emergency. If you are an
independent artist, consider a list of family members, neighbors or close
friends. You might also want to list your landlord, bank contact and insurance
agent, as well as any vendors important to your operation. Include cell
phone numbers and e-mail addresses if possible. Distribute the list to everyone on it, and encourage them to keep a copy at
home, in their wallet or on their computer. In an emergency, your key players will know how to communicate with each other and proceed if normal operations are disrupted. Visit the Federal Emergency Management
Agency's website for more emergency planning tips. Visit the SCAC's emergency preparedness page for more information for artists and arts groups. |
