 South Carolina Arts Commission News
July 2010
Hello everyone,

Executive Director
Ken May
During our Canvas of the People tour, we heard a variety of ideas - some unique to certain communities and some common everywhere we visited.

One of the recurring themes was the need to ensure that the arts are available to everyone, regardless of geographical location, income, educational level, race, abilities or access to technology. As we continue to process input from the Canvas, I'm pleased to announce that our state is out front in working to erase the accessibility divide as it relates to the arts. VSA-South Carolina was recently recognized with an award for excellence in educational programming by VSA International, a nonprofit organization founded more than 35 years ago to create a society where people with disabilities learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts.

The S.C. Arts Commission is one of several partners supporting the VSA-South Carolina affiliate and its mission to promote quality and accessible art experiences for people with all types of disabilities throughout our state. Our affiliate, with one staff member -- director Julia Brown -- was recognized over many other state affiliates with larger staffs and budgets. As our nation celebrates the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, we in South Carolina can take pride in our progress while pledging to continue working to make the arts accessible to all citizens.

Sincerely,

Ken May
Executive Director

Arts Commission awards 2011 grants

The S.C Arts Commission has awarded $1,278,726 in grants to communities, artists, arts organizations and schools for the 2011 fiscal year. These funds, provided by the S.C. General Assembly, will support 221 projects in 37 counties. Programs funded include Arts in Education, Folklife and Traditional Arts, General Operating Support and Subgranting. Read the press release for more information and to see grants listed by program and by county.

Do you want to be a Roadie?

Columbia's New Audience Road Show hits the road for another season in September. This year the S.C. Arts Commission is teaming up with the S.C. Philharmonic, Trustus Theatre, Vibrations Dance Company, The Nickelodeon, and the Columbia Museum of Art to give Columbia-area residents ages 23-39 a behind-the-scenes look at what's involved in creating and presenting art for the stage, screen and wall. The program is for "newbies" who want to learn more about the arts and for those with arts experience who want to learn more about the organizations involved. Applications for the Columbia Road Show are due Aug. 5. Visit the website for details and an application.

The Road Show arrives in Charleston!

The Road Show has been recognized as a national model in building arts participation among young adults, and now a partner program is set to launch in Charleston. Applications for the Charleston Road Show are due Aug. 26. Visit the Charleston Road Show's Facebook page for more details.
VSA-South Carolina wins national award

Congratulations to VSA-South Carolina for receiving a 2010 Award of Excellence in Educational Programming! VSA-South Carolina was honored for its many arts education projects around the state that promote an inclusive classroom environment for students with disabilities and the general student population. The award was presented by VSA founder Jean Kennedy Smith at the VSA International Festival in June. VSA-South Carolina works with S.C. artists, educators, arts administrators, and health, human and social service professionals to create spaces and programs dedicated to the arts that are accessible and available to people with disabilities. The S.C. Arts Commission is one of several state and national programming and funding partners. Visit the website for details about VSA and to read an article highlighting its programs.

Artists invited to apply for fellowships

Artists working in visual arts, craft, music performance and music composition are invited to apply for 2012 Individual Artist Fellowships. Applications are due Oct. 1, 2010.

Fellowships recognize the artistic achievements of S.C's exceptional individual artists and can lead to additional exposure and opportunities. Fellowships are made through a highly competitive, anonymous process and are based solely on artistic excellence. Fellow receives $5,000 each in recognition of their superior artistic merit. Read more about the application process and the current fellows.

Submit a short story to Fiction Project

Writers are invited to apply for the 2011 South Carolina Fiction Project, a writing competition for previously unpublished short stories of 2,500 words or less. Up to eight stories will be selected for publication; each writer whose work is selected will receive $250 from Sandlapper magazine, which purchases first publication rights.

Applicants should submit an application form, a brief biography and three copies of the story entry to the Arts Commission by Oct. 1, 2010.  Forms and guidelines are available on the Arts Commission's website.

Emergency planning one step at a time

Sometimes a large task is more easily accomplished when it's broken down into smaller pieces. Here's one easy thing you can do THIS WEEK to make headway in being better prepared for any kind of emergency: make an up-to-date contact list of staff, volunteers, board members and others who might need to reach each other in an emergency. If you are an independent artist, consider a list of family members, neighbors or close friends. You might also want to list your landlord, bank contact and insurance agent, as well as any vendors important to your operation. Include cell phone numbers and e-mail addresses if possible. Distribute the list to everyone on it, and encourage them to keep a copy at home, in their wallet or on their computer. In an emergency, your key players will know how to communicate with each other and proceed if normal operations are disrupted. Visit the Federal Emergency Management Agency's website for more emergency planning tips. Visit the SCAC's emergency preparedness page for more information for artists and arts groups.
