South Carolina Arts Commission News
Hello everyone,

The S.C. Arts Commission has awarded $314,109 to 33 S.C. arts organizations as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. These funds will help save 139 arts-sector jobs. The Arts Commission is also pleased to announce an early bird discount for Statewide Arts Conference registration and a collaboration that will provide affordable business training for artists. And more good news - we present the latest round of Individual Artist Fellows.
Congratulations, Fellows!

The S.C. Arts Commission has named four artists as 2010 Individual Artist Fellows: Kim Lee Keats (craft), Terrance Orlando Henderson (dance performance), Jill Eathorne Bahr (dance choreography), and Damond L. Howard (visual art). Fellows receive $5,000 in recognition of their superior artistic merit. Read more on the Fellowships Web page.
139 arts jobs preserved with Recovery Act grants

The S.C. Arts Commission has awarded $314,109 in one-time grants under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Grants will go to 33 S.C. arts organizations in 13 counties to help secure 61 staff positions and 78 contract positions threatened by the economic downturn. A list of recipients is posted on the Web site.

Recovery Act grants are funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Southern Arts Federation is distributing its Recovery Act funding within its nine-state region and is allocating $51,125 of the Arts Commission's $314,109 in Recovery Act grants directly to arts organizations throughout the state.
Early registration discount for Statewide Arts Conference!

Register for the 2009 Statewide Arts Conference by July 31 and receive a $30 discount! The early-bird rate of $75 will increase to $105 on Aug. 1. Visit the Web site to register online or by mail.

"Arts Be Nimble: Navigating Tough Terrain" is scheduled for Sept. 15 at the Columbia Conference Center. The conference schedule is designed to maximize your time with multiple opportunities to polish skills, discover new ways to use current resources, and forge collaborations. Check out the workshop schedule and stay tuned for additional details.

Statewide Arts Conference
Affordable business training for artists

The S.C. Arts Commission has partnered with three organizations to offer affordable business and entrepreneurial training for artists. A portion of the Leveraging Investments in Creativity grant will help underwrite the Artist as an Entrepreneur Institute in Columbia, reducing the cost from $450 to $150. The grant funds are also enabling The Tate Center for Entrepreneurship in Charleston to offer a $150 rate to the first 20 artists who register. And both the artist-focused FastTrac course in Greenville and the general FastTrac New Venture courses around the state are offered for $145. Visit the artist training Web page for details and registration information for each course.
A new name for LINC

S.C. Artists LINC is now the S.C. Artists' Ventures Initiative. Because the national LINC organization plans to sunset the LINC name in two years, the S.C. Arts Commission's program needed a new identity. Artists' Ventures implies that the program belongs to artists, because it does! The gatherings, business training and start-up support that comprise the program are based on input from S.C. artists. Brush up on the latest on the SCAVI Web page.

Innovative Space Awards announced

The MetLife Innovative Space Awards (ISA) is a national awards program that emphasizes the benefits that affordable artist spaces yield for both artists and their communities. In Nov. 2009, ISA will award from $10,000 to $50,000 for up to five winning projects. Applications may be submitted by nonprofit organizations, artists, community members or public agencies. Application deadline is Aug. 24. ISA was developed by the national Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC) and MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning in partnership with the MetLife Foundation and the Ford Foundation.  Visit the national LINC Web site for details and application guidelines.
Emergency planning wake-up call

The Craft Emergency Relief Fund has posted its 2008 Yearbook on YouTube. The video highlights a few of the craft artists assisted by CERF after fires, floods, and other emergencies. A few of the slides are sobering "before" and "after" shots of artist studios. Check out the video and other CERF resources, and use the S.C. Arts Commission's list of resources to prepare before disaster strikes.

First Novel selection published

First Novel prize winner Brian Ray's novel, "Through the Pale Door" has been released and is available from Hub City Writers Project or from Amazon.com. The First Novel Prize is a program of the S.C. Arts Commission, Humanities CouncilSC and the State Library. More information about Ray, his work and upcoming events is available on www.brianrayfiction.com.
New board officers and member

The S.C. Arts Commission Board has new officers and a new member. New officers are Charles T. "Bud" Ferillo of Columbia, chairman, and Sarah Lynn Hayes of Rock Hill, vice chairman. Board members elected to the executive committee include Linda Stern of Columbia, immediate past chairman and Henry Horowitz of Greenville.

Elizabeth Factor of Charleston has been appointed to the board by Gov. Mark Sanford. Factor joins other board members to help direct the state agency's resources toward supporting a thriving arts environment in S.C.
Nonprofit handbook available

The S.C. Nonprofit Model Employee Handbook and Employer Kit is now available from the S.C. Association of Nonprofit Organizations (SCANPO). The kit includes model policies for an employee handbook, copies of required federal and state posters and sample forms. Family and Medical Leave Act and Fair Credit Reporting Act policies are also included. The kit is offered to SCANPO members for $95 and to nonmembers for $125. An order form is available on SCANPO's Web site.
United We Serve

Artists and arts organizations are encouraged to participate in "United We Serve," the new nationwide service initiative that kicked off June 22. In addition to creating projects and involving volunteers, the arts community is invited to submit success stories demonstrating how volunteer projects have engaged the community or galvanized action. The stories will be included in a national database being developed to showcase volunteer efforts nationwide. Relatively few arts-related projects have been posted to date. For ideas on how to participate and how to share your story, visit Serve.gov.
Second grants writing workshop to be scheduled

An enthusiastic response to a free grants writing workshop for cultural and nonprofit organization means that all seats have been reserved for the July 14 event! However, a second workshop will be scheduled for the spring. The S.C. Arts Commission, in partnership with the Humanities CouncilSC, the S.C. Federation of Museums, McKissick Museum, the S.C. Dept. of Archives and History, S. C. State University and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, offered the workshop as a learning opportunity and a chance for partnership building between local organizations with similar missions. The Humanities CouncilSC will announce details on its Web site when the second workshop is scheduled.
