Kimi Maeda self-produces original adaptation, "The Crane Wife"

Scenic artist and puppeteer Kimi Maeda used quarterly grant funding from the Cultural Council of Richland and Lexington Counties, as well as support from friends and artistic colleagues, to stage her first original work, "The Crane Wife." Says Maeda, "After eight years of turning these ideas over in my head I can't tell you how rewarding it was to finally have an audience see the finished product."  Read more about that finished product, and about the work of another great puppeteer, Lyon Hill, here.

Y'all, we had the best time at the S.C. Artists' Retreat!  It was great to see old friends and meet new people who are doing amazing artistic work across our state.  If you were unable to attend, visit the Free Times' Arts Beat Blog to read Dan Cook's great synopsis of our Sunday workshop delivered by Andrew Simonet (a big thanks to Dan for the synopsis and for covering so many important arts events in the blog!).  The feedback from attendees has been super-positive, and I imagine we will hold a similar event next year. If you have ideas for another necessary gathering of artists, large or small, e-mail me!

Summer is supposed to be a time to both relax and renew (at least in the mind of this former teacher).  I encourage you to make time to renew your vision of your artistic career by participating in one of the entrepreneurial development courses being offered this summer as part of the S.C. Artists' Ventures Initiative.  We sent you a bonus e-mail concerning this training a few days ago.  More information can be found by clicking here.  Please forward this information to other artists and sign up now!

Most months, we use the left-hand column of this e-newsletter to feature an established artist who has received a great honor or award.  However, equally important are the achievements of emerging artists, and this month we feature Kimi Maeda, a Columbia puppeteer. If you would like to suggest an artist feature, ideas for the newsletter, the blog, at our gatherings, or our other programming, please send them our way!

Stay cool in the summer heat!
