Earlier deadline for Annual Operating Support applicants

The application deadline for Annual Operating Support grants is Feb. 15, 2008. This is an earlier deadline than in the past so please be aware that the deadline date has changed. The FY2009 application is now available. Check the guidelines for more details.

Grantees are reminded to replace the Arts Commission's old logo with the new logo in print and electronic materials. Logos and usage guidelines are available

February brings an air of excitement as we await the arrival of the National Symphony Orchestra Feb. 9 and gear up for Arts Advocacy Day Feb. 12 and the S.C. Book Festival Feb. 22-24. Take advantage of these top-quality arts programming and awareness opportunities.

nso logoThe National Symphony Orchestra begins its jam-packed tour of the state on Feb. 9. In addition to the full orchestra performing five concerts, small groups of orchestra members will fan out to 23 communities for 100 separate events in seven days, including master classes, school assemblies and chamber music performances. Several events are open to the public. View the complete schedule for more information.

Help the Arts Commission reach its goal of selling 400 "Driven by the Arts" license plates by July 1 -- buy your plate today!
 
You do not have to wait until your current license plate expires. The S.C. Dept. of Motor Vehicles will pro-rate the regular $24 vehicle registration fee based on your current renewal date. (The specialty plate fee is $70 per year.) Funds from license plate sales go back into communities and classrooms statewide through arts education programs and artist residencies. Each month during the South Carolina Arts Commission's 40th Anniversary celebration, we'll unveil new lists of people, accomplishments, ideas and milestones that have contributed to the arts during the past 40 years.
40th anniversary events and opportunities 
 
Plan to toast the S.C. Arts Commission's 40th anniversary with a festive evening celebration on May 7 at the Columbia Museum of Art. The S.C. Arts Foundation will honor the 40th anniversary and the arts community with great food, a spectacular art auction and entertainment. Tickets are $75. Watch for more details coming soon! 
 
"The African American Voice," the Arts Commission's 40th anniversary exhibit, is on display at the Arts Center
in Clemson through Feb. 29. The exhibit includes artworks from the State Art Collection by 24 African-American artists and is free to the public.  For information about hosting the exhibit, contact Harriett Green, (803)734-8762.
 
You or your organization can participate in the Arts Commission's 40th anniversary by telling your story, designating your event as a "40th anniversary" event, using the anniversary logo in your print and electronic communications, or asking your board to pass a resolution honoring the anniversary. Details and more ideas are available online.
Verner Awards luncheon and art sale set for April 16 
 
verner awardMark your calendar for the annual Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards luncheon and art sale, scheduled for April 16 at the Columbia Marriott. Luncheon tickets are $50 per person; the art sale is open to the public. 
 
The S.C. Arts Foundation has issued a call for artists to participate in the art sale. Artists who wish to be considered must submit materials by March 3. Submission guidelines and more information are available online.
Arts Advocacy Day is Feb. 12

This year Arts Advocacy Day is packed with "extras," including a free workshop presented by a top governmental relations team and a special appearance by the National Symphony Orchestra. If you're new to arts advocacy, this is a great year to join forces with fellow advocates at the Statehouse. Registration deadline is Feb. 8. For more information or to register, visit the S. C. New NEA grant guidelines 
 

The National Endowment for the Arts has issued application guidelines for the next round of Grants for Arts Projects. Organizations may apply under these categories: 

  • Access to Artistic Excellence Grants range from $5,000 to $150,000 with deadlines of March 10 and Aug. 11
  • Challenge America: Reaching Every Community Fast-Track Review Grants support projects that reach underserved populations. Grants are for $10,000; deadline is June 2.
  • Learning in the Arts for Children and Youth Grants support arts education in school- or community-based settings. Amounts range from $5,000 to $150,000; deadline is June 9.

Literary news

As a member of the       S.C. Literary Arts Partnership, the Arts Commission is again proud to help sponsor the S.C. Book Festival scheduled for Feb. 22-24 in Columbia and to help present the Midlands Regional Poetry Out Loud contest during the Book Festival. Both events are free to the public.
 
Benedict College, the Richland County Public Library and other partners are participating in The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts. A calendar of events is available online.
Public Art 360 

Public Art 360Artists, architects, landscape designers, government officials and others are encouraged to attend Public Art 360: Symposium from Seven Perspectives scheduled for April 11-12 at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill campus. The symposium will address how to initiate, fund and implement public art projects. The S.C. Arts Commission, Percent for Art Collaborative, the N.C. Arts Council, and the Orange County Arts Commission are presenting the event. Register by Feb. 22 for $60.
