Verner Awards nominations
 The Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the Elizabeth O'Neill Verner Awards, the highest honor the state presents in the arts. The awards are presented annually to recognize achievements and contributions to the arts in S.C. Nominations are due Jan. 15, 2008. |

Folk Heritage Awards nominations
The Arts Commission is accepting nominations for the Jean Laney Harris Folk Heritage Awards, presented annually by the S.C. General Assembly to practitioners of traditional arts. The awards are managed jointly by the Arts Commission and the McKissick Museum at the University of South Carolina. Nominations are due Jan. 15, 2008. |

First Novel judge named
Distinguished novelist Percival Everett will judge the First Novel Competition sponsored by the S.C. Arts Commission and the Hub City Writers Project. Raised in Columbia, Everett is a professor of English at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and an award-winning author of more than a dozen novels.

National Symphony Orchestra coming to S.C. a
 Make plans to see The National Symphony Orchestra during one of its five performances in South Carolina Feb. 9-15, 2008. Each year one state is chosen to schedule the orchestra, based at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, for a range of activities, including concerts, clinics, master classes and workshops. Read more... |

Artists asked to comment on LINC
Artists are encouraged to visit the SC Artists LINC web page and blog to review comments and add to the discussion about the LINC project. South Carolina has been selected for a national initiative known as Leveraging Investments in Creativity (LINC), a ten-year project designed to improve conditions for artists in all disciplines, so that artists can more readily do their creative work and contribute to community life. |

Mayors participating in the 2007 Mayors Institute will gather in Charleston Nov. 15-16 to present community design projects and solicit solutions from design experts. Mayors taking part include:

South Carolina Arts Commission is the state agency charged with
creating a thriving arts environment that benefits all South
Carolinians, regardless of their location or circumstances. Created by
the South Carolina General Assembly in 1967, the Arts Commission is
celebrating 40 years of increasing public participation in the arts by
providing services, grants and leadership initiatives in three areas:
arts education, community arts development and artist development.
Headquartered in Columbia, S. C., the Arts Commission is funded by the
state of South Carolina and by the federal government through the
