Everywhere you look, advertisements are trying to convince you to hurry up.
It is hard to believe that it is already Thanksgiving. Looking back towards my childhood we were taught by our parents and by our schools that Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the hardships the first settlers had and how they were helped by the native Indians to adapt to this new land. It is a time to spend with our family and friends and give thanks for all of the sacrifices that our foremothers and forefathers gave for this country.
Today it seems that this holiday has taken on a whole new meaning. Based on the news stories you would think that Thanksgiving is the day you eat as much as you can so you can wait on long lines at 2 am the next day for the big sales. Instead of enjoying a beautiful day with the family we are rushing through the day to get to black Friday.
With all of the advertising we are being subjected to it has become apparent that companies are trying to force everyone to hurry up. I'd like to know what the rush is?
This is also happening to the salon business. Lately I have noticed salons advertising the latest in hurry up services. Whether it is the express keratin treatment or a 10 minute color process. I can't help but think why they are trying to rush through these services. How many times have you been told "Rome wasn't built in a day", "Good things come to those who wait", "if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is" or best of all "talk your time to do it right"?
Times are different today and people are working more and might not have as much time as they used to but that is not a reason to rush through something and cause untold damage to your hair. 3 years ago I wrote in an email that Spa85 would not perform the keratin straightening treatments because we did not want to subject our stylists and clients to the health risks and we also did not believe in the quality of the finished look it provided. I received many emails from clients about how we were crazy for not offering this $350+ service. Now we are hearing stories about stylists getting persistent nose bleeds because of the treatment. We constantly educate our clients about how we can bring health back into their hair without the use of band aid treatments and fads and how we can provide long lasting results by doing services right.
These new 10 minute color treatments are the latest fad. But what you need to know is that if they are not done correctly you are going to experience the muddying up of your hair color. Stylists are in a rush to do these treatments because they will cost more and they can fit more clients in the same amount of time. But the sacrifice will be to your hair. What these new color treatments do is use heavily concentrated amounts of chemicals in the color that prematurely swells the hair cuticle to accept as much of this color as possible. You will experience faster oxidation of the color and build up a resistance to new color over time due to the damage caused from the initial application.
Don't be fooled by great slogans and persistent nudging. You can probably cook your Thanksgiving turkey in the microwave in about 10 minutes but would you really want to eat it afterwards? Take your time to smell the roses and make the proper time to get your hair services done right the first time. It always cost more to correct your hair than to get it done correctly. What did they used to say.... "don't be penny wise and pound foolish"? "Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it" - Ferris Bueller
