Latinos to Obama: Our Health Matters

On August 31, EPA dismissed a 17-year-old Civil Rights Complaint filed by CRPE on behalf of residents in Kettleman City and Buttonwillow, CA.  The complaint challenges the State's siting of all its toxic waste dumps in Latino communities.  Both Kettleman City and Buttonwillow have suffered from unexplained birth defect clusters, high cancer rates and other health effects. EPA dismissed the complaint, claiming that toxic waste dumps have no negative impacts on the communities where they are located.

Latino leaders are now calling on President Obama to intervene.  Read the press release

Senator Rubio sides with lobbyists, ignores constiuents in Solar for All vote
Thank you to everyone who called on their Senators to support AB 1990, the "Solar for All" bill.   We put up a good fight but narrowly lost to powerful industry lobbyists. The fight is not over; we will continue to push for Solar for All!

One key democrat that lobbyists were able to sway was South Valley Senator Michael Rubio (16th dist.).  Rubio voted against AB 1990 on the Senate Floor.   Rubio also authored and passed Senate Bill 1122, legislation subsidizing bioenergy production from burning organic material. The process is even more polluting than traditional energy production, and unlike AB 1990, does nothing to promote local hiring.   This comes on the heels of Rubio's sneaky attempt to weaken the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), a vital cornerstone of environmental law, and his failure to vote for the California Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Now CRPE and South Valley residents are vowing to hold Sen. Rubio accountable for his failure to represent the interests of his Valley constituents.  Read More

CRPE Says Farewell to Two Longtime Advisory Board Members
Caroline Farrell presents Linda with a plaque in honor of her commitment to environmental justice.

Linda MacKay of Frazier Park has been a dedicated environmental justice advocate since she moved to the Valley over 20 years ago and helped defeat a nearby proposed toxic waste incinerator. With great sadness she is retiring from the Advisory Board, which she helped found in 1998.

Richard Hoeugh of Frazier Park also retires from the Board this month. The Harvard trained, Army veteran spent 50 years as a trial lawyer and has dedicated his time to working with more organizations then we have room to list.

Both Linda and Richard's hard work, dedication and spirit will be greatly missed by CRPE!
