Worst Air Quality in Decades Slams the San Joaquin Valley Hard

This past December and January, dry weather and unchecked pollution inflicted the worst air quality the Valley has seen since the 1980's.  During almost every hour of every day the air in the Valley was labeled "unhealthy" (outdoor activity should be avoided whenever possible) or "very unhealthy" (no outdoor activities should occur).  Why?   Fine particulate matter, known at PM2.5, clogged the Valley's air and the residents' lungs.  So, what's being done?

A Right Without a Remedy Is No Right at All

The EPA has long neglected its obligation to ensure that communities aren't subject to environmental racism, the term which describes the disproportionate impact of environmental hazards experienced by people of color. However, numerous community complaints about just that sort of discrimination have been ignored by EPA for years, some of which CRPE filed over 16 years ago. Now, CRPE is taking action, demanding that EPA address these compliments and give residents the justice they deserve...

This Month at CRPE 

A roundup of what we were working on in January

 

-CRPE and NRDC won a lawsuit to force agencies to develop a better plan to reduce smog in the L.A. air basin, including increasing public transit and carpool and bike lanes.

 

-In Delano we held the second installment in our monthly Smart Valley Places training for community members focused on land use and sustainable growth.

 

-EPA visited Arvin and promised to concentrate on the Valley's environmental health needs.

 

-CRPE and community members met with Kern County officials to discuss how to build a system for residents and agencies to report and respond to community issues.
