Hello from Forests for Maine's Future.
There's a lot of news on the forest front, in Maine and globally, especially in forest-related research:
In Maine, the most recent firewood exchange interdicted some potentially dangerous firewood from the Asian long-horned beetle-infested Worcester, Mass. area. And, there's a new trail in the western Maine High Peaks area. Gov. Paul LePage vetoes a bill that would have prohibited hiring foreign loggers to work on state land.
Elsewhere, new research shows:
Songbirds and people like the same type of forest.
Bacteria on old growth trees may help forests grow
Stable temps boost biodiversity in tropical mountains
Sustainable forests on rise
And, there's an interesting story that shows that forest managers should take a bird's eye view of the woods.
These are only a few of the many stories about forests and forest-related issues we've posted on our website. Click here to see the list going back to the first of the year.
Meanwhile, if you haven't already, check out our May Fresh from the Woods feature on Bernd Heinrich, one of the country's most popular nature writers, with 15 books to his credit, and learn what's he's working on now and his thoughts on managing his 600 acres of western Maine woodland.
Check back later this month for a story on the threat to our forest from alien invaders.
See you in the woods!
