Hello from Forests for Maine's Future!
We've added several links to interesting news stories about forests here in Maine and around the world over the past week that we think you might like checking out.
The U.S. Forest Service recently published a report that says increased housing density on land near private forests is raising the extinction threat for at-risk species. It's part of the USFS "Forests on the Edge" series.
On a related note, the Endangered Species Coalition released a report on the most important ecosystems threated by climate change. The"It's Getting Hot Out There" report has the Maine Woods on its list, though it's not in the top 10.
And . . . the Associated Press reported that the Northeast was hot, hot hot in 2010 and when the records were analyzed, Maine had its warmest year. Guess what the hottest was?
In addition, Maine state parks enjoyed their busiest year in 21 years, the Land Use Regulation Commission approved an expansion of the Kibby Mountain wind farm project, and recent warm weather has played havoc with logging operations. In January we'll be writing about the state's "town forests."
See you in the woods.
