Fall "Ghost Town" Camping - A Great Success!

This past weekend we hosted our Fall '08 Ghost Town Trip to the ghost town of Swansea, Arizona. It was a great trip - and not just for the usual reasons. Yes, the weather was great - typical fall desert weather with warm days and cool clear nights. And the food was great as well.

Proper Tent Pole Care

One of the most important parts of a camping tent is the pole set. They can be aluminum, carbon fiber, fiberglass or steel. I have even seen some tents that were held up by air filled tubes. Regardless of their material makeup, they are very important to the longevity of the tent. I have spent hours working with customer’s tent poles to either repair them or just to give them a tune up, and the thing I see the most is tent poles that would have lasted much longer had the owner taken a little bit of time to take care of them.

Celestial Highlights, for November

This month is highlighted by Venus and Jupiter in the south west. Both are moving easterly, but Venus is moving at an amazing speed! Watch it close in on Jupiter at the end of the month with a spectacular conjuction with a thin crescent Moon. Fantastic!

Got an astronomy related question? Ask the navigator. Questions and answers will be posted here next month.

Lubes and Glues

G'day campers! Today’s hint is short but sweet. We’ve gone over some MAJOR repairs in the past few issues, so I'll go lightly on you this month. Basically, we’ll go over some very helpful info on lubes and glues.

Flourless Chocolate Cake

This is a camping favorite, since it does not require a lot of ingredients or work! Besides, it is awesome, tastes great with fresh blackberries picked on the trail, and of course MUST be topped with whipped cream!

Chef Jason’s World Famous Omelet Pouches

OK, I can't exactly take all the credit on this one. A fellow chef friend of mine helped me put this together when I asked what he thought the easiest way to do eggs at a campsite would be. And this is a somewhat common method that hikers use as well, but this is a great idea for any campsite. It’s simple, everybody loves omelets, and there’s very little cleanup. It's a win-win. The recipe here is written per serving. Multiply by the number of people you’re cooking for.
