What's New for August

In the past month, Paha Qué Wilderness has moved to a newer, more modern facility in Poway, California. Like any move, it was a lot of hard work, but not without its rewards! Aside from doing some long overdue house cleaning, we have come up with a large list of Used Gear items that we will be adding to the site on a daily basis over the next few weeks. Check back regularly for some great deals on our Reconditioned Gear during the month of August!

Also in the past month, we have completed our extensive review of two new manufacturing facilities to ensure that they meet our stringent quality requirements. What this means is that we have now increased our production capacity to eliminate the stock-out issues that have occurred this year.

Fall "Ghost Town" Camping Trip - Wanna Join?

Last month I wrote about our recent "Ghost Town" trip to Southeastern Arizona, and I received many great responses from our readers. The number one request was for us to plan a group trip, and show some of our readers the remote sites that we have found over the years.

So we are planning another "Ghost Town" trip for this fall - Wednesday, October 8 through Sunday, October 12th. I would like to extend an invitation to all our newsletter readers to join with us on this trip. We will all meet in either San Diego or Quartzsite, AZ on Wednesday, and proceed from Quartzsite to the town of Bouse, Arizona. From Bouse we will travel off-road to the mining ghost town of Swansea, Arizona. We will spend two days camped in Swansea, then travel from there to the ghost town of Alamo.

How to choose your camping site

If you are camping with the family, take some time and choose a spot together. Try to decide on the spot as a group and it is easier to make everyone happy, and we know how hard that can be.

Coming up with a theme might make it fun. Maybe a trip to a ghost town or some historic place. A forest or lake that is written about in some children’s books would be something that the whole family can enjoy.

Celestial Highlights, for August

Things are happening fast in the western sky right now. Mercury and Venus are swooping out from behind the Sun's daylight and rising quickly in the evening sky for a meeting with Saturn. Strange skyfellows - Saturn, Venus and Mercury - but Astronomy is funny that way. And fun!

Got an astronomy related question? Ask the navigator. Questions and answers will be posted here next month.

Laundering Outerwear and Gear

After a few good uses, the faithful sleeping bag begins to get a little on the raunchy side. To wash or not to wash, that is the question.

Sure you can wash it. The main thing to remember for washing a sleeping bag is to use a NON-AGITATING machine. If you don't have a front loader or newer non agitator type top loader, go to a Laundromat.

Dutch Oven Pork Casserole

Here's a great recipe for comfort food no matter where you're camping. A Pork Casserole with just a little bit of Southwestern flavor.

Chef Jason’s World Famous Mushroom Burgers

Well it's time for another grilling masterpiece. This is another guaranteed crowd pleaser. And besides my buffalo strips and grilled stuffed mushrooms (next month) it is the most often requested item I'm asked to make at get togethers.

You do this at home before you leave and transport the burgers in; you guessed it, zip-top bags. Gallon size variety please. Separate layers (up to two) within the same bag with plastic wrap. We’ve been keeping it simple but this will be slightly more complicated, which is half the fun if you ask me. And your extra effort will be rewarded, especially from the hails and compliments you'll get from everyone at the camp site.
