What's New for July!

At Paha Que’ Wilderness, we strive to provide our customers with the very best in quality and performance. We also strive to support our customers after the sale. We want you to know that we stand behind our products, and continually look for ways to improve our service.
Last month we unveiled our new, improved website. If you haven’t visited our website in awhile, drop in and see what’s new! Along with the tremendous new products that we are offering this year, such as our PetShelter and the Shadow Mountain Cabana, you will also find a wealth of new resources available to our customers.
We have added Live Chat, which allows you to contact one of our friendly customer service associates in real time, anytime Monday through Friday. We have also added improved navigation to help you find what you need quicker. We are adding a Customer Comment feature to every product, so you can see what other Paha Que’ campers are saying about our products, and so you can add your own comments. We are so confident in the quality of our products the new customer comments will not be edited (except for bad words!) so you can read all comments, good or bad.
You will also be able to upload your favorite pictures of your latest campout directly to our site. The picture must include one of our tents or shelters and you, of course, having a great time camping!
Ordering directly from our website will be easier than ever, as will finding the right accessories for your existing Paha Que’ tent or shelter. Our new website will also make it easier for you to register your purchase with us, see new and improved set-up videos, download and print set-up instructions, and view camping tips, recipes, and weather reports.
But best of all, this month we are expanding our line of camping gear to include some of the best camping gear we have seen over the years. Be sure to check out our new assortment of “Paha Que’ Approved” camping gear now available at www.PahaQue.com. And remember, we stand behind every product that we sell.
If you would like to join the growing family of satisfied Paha Que’ owners, please consider taking advantage of the great offer we are making to our subscribers. If you already own Paha Que’ gear, than we thank you for your patronage. Please let us know if we can ever be of assistance to you in the future.
Happy Trails!

Tell us your favorite camping story! Send us your best recipe! We would love to hear from you. Send us your story or recipe and if we publish it in the Paha Que' Newsletter you will win a Paha Que' T-shirt or cap!

This month we have an incredibly delicious Dutch oven recipe for you to try. Anita loves quiche and this variation on the quiche, ala Dutch oven style is sure to please. It is wonderful for breakfast, but of course is BEST as a champagne brunch! See below for this month's recipe.

  • The Great American Backyard Campout
On June 22nd and 23rd, the San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation sponsored the 1st Great American Backyard Campout at 4S Ranch Community Park. 125 youth attended the campout, which provided an invaluable experience with nature for many youth who have not yet had the opportunity. Activities included Tent Relay Races, Tug of War, Soccer, Hiking, Crafts, Dutch Oven cooking, Stargazing and Leave No Trace environmental education techniques. We had a great time working and playing with the kids, cooking & eating the best macaroni and cheese you've ever tasted from Dutch ovens and stargazing with the awesome 8" telescope donated by Oceanside Photo & Telescope. It's absolutely amazing working with the youth and expanding their knowledge of the great outdoors. I know that everyone involved with this years campout is truly looking forward to making the 2008 Great American Backyard Campout in San Diego bigger and better than ever.
The Great American Backyard Campout was the result of a partnership between the San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation, the California Park and Recreation Society, Aztec Adventures Outdoor Program, Paha Que' Wilderness and Oceanside Photo & Telescope, with the assistance of the National Wildlife Federation and the Outdoor Industry Foundation.

One of the most anticipated events after a long day of hiking, biking, fishing or whatever you do when tent camping is looking up into the night sky and connecting the dots, identifying constellations or dreaming of far off worlds.

Our Manager of Operations, Pete Quintanilla, follows the stars more closely than the Hubble Space Telescope! He provides you with all the celestial happenings for the month to help you better navigate the stars at night.

    Choosing the Right Sleeping Bag

A sleeping bag is one of the most important equipment purchases a camper will make. Everything looks better the next day if you get a good night’s sleep and of course your sleeping bag should make a difference.
There are many choices when it comes to sleeping bags. The type of bag you need depends on what type of camping you are going to be doing. You can have more than one bag if you like to do backpacking and also family style camping when weight is not much of an issue.
Sleeping bags come in two basic shapes, mummy and rectangular. The best choice for you depends on your type of camping, and how much room you want to move around.
If you like to have room to move in your bag then you would more than likely want a rectangular bag. If you were into high tech, lightweight bags then you would be happier with a mummy style bag.
Also if space is a concern then the mummy bag would be your choice.
With both styles of bag, you want to make sure that it is long enough and has the proper temperature rating.
Temperature rating is very important to your safety as well as comfort. If the rating on the bag does not meet your temperature requirements then you could find yourself in serious trouble, your metabolism slows down when you are sleeping and you might not wake up in the same condition you went to sleep.
You can spend as much as you want on a sleeping bag but if it does not meet your needs then it is useless.
Do some research and make an educated choice, your sleeping bag is not the piece of equipment you want to buy on an impulse.
Always be adventurous, but always be safe!

    Saving Your Tent Poles

Everyone knows when to put UP your tent poles, but not everyone knows when to take them DOWN. Here is a quick tutorial on how and when to install tent poles the proper way, saving you money from costly repairs later. When setting up your tent, get a partner to stand in the corner next to you; each of you should insert your pole into its end or grommet. Then stand at the opposing two corners and GENTLY begin to bend the poles to form an arch. Sliding the excess fabric on the pole sleeves toward you while arching the poles can ease this process. Firmly place the end of the pole into the grommet at the same time as your partner places his/hers into theirs. This helps keep even pressure on the poles at all times, and avoids unnecessary stress on the pole while bending it into an arch. Now, the all-important addendum, ALWAYS take your poles down during a windstorm. Simply get your partner and release two of the corners at the same time, allowing the tent to collapse quickly to the ground. Leave the pole ends out of the corner grommets until the windstorm is over. Reassemble the tent poles as described above when the wind subsides. I guarantee two things: if you DO NOT lower your tent in a windstorm, the poles will overbend or break; if you DO lower your tent, there may be no visible damage to your poles at all. Take care of your equipment; it will take care of you in return!
