Jamie Seagle
Lazy days of summer? Not at Rogerson Communities. We're busy going to bat for elders with new offerings in our day programs and housing in development for frail, low-income elders. And - much like our Welcome Home! honoree Jack Connors, Jr. - we continue to support the community, where and when we can.  For several years, we've sponsored the Marlins, a Roberto Clemente Youth Sports Program team in Roxbury. (Photo above.)  Going to bat for the kids on the team, as we do for the elders we serve, can indeed make a world of difference.

Jack Connors, Jr. Q&A
On November 4th, Rogerson Communities will honor Jack Connors, scion of Boston philanthropy, with the Charles E. Rogerson Award for Community Service at the 12th annual Welcome Home!fundraising gala. Why has Rogerson chosen Jack as our honoree this year? Courtney Barth, Director of Individual Giving, finds out.

CB:
Philanthopy seems to be second nature with you. Where did you get your inspiration?
JC:  I would have to say it was yet one more gift from our parents.  They didn't have much, but it was always their desire to share what little we had with those in need.

CB:  As a young man, were you involved in community service?
JC:  As a senior in high school, I had the opportunity to wash dishes and deliver food trays to the handicapped boys and girls at the Massachusetts Hospital School for Children in Canton, MA.  It was there that I first came to realize the joy of giving.  These kids were grateful for my time and company and I have never forgotten that experience. A very dear friend, Ted Kelly, Chairman & CEO of Liberty Mutual, once honored me by saying and I quote, "You were giving money away before you had any."

CB:
Why do you think what Rogerson Communities does for Boston is important?
JC: Rogerson Communities provides many humanitarian services as do others, but the dignity with which they do so is both unique and extraordinary.

CB: How can elders play a role in shaping the youth of today?
JC: Today's youth are no different that the youth of yesteryear.  But in the past, grown-ups had more time to provide wisdom, counsel and mentoring.  We need to get to these kids early and we need to share our stories.  No one is better at storytelling than those who have lived long lives.

Rogerson Adult Day Health Programs
Rogerson adult day health programs are proving that you're never too old to improve your flexibility, or your mood.  Thanks to funding in part from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care as a part of the comprehensive Healthy Rogerson program, elders are practicing yoga in Roslindale, Brookline, and Roxbury. "Teaching elders new stretches and breathing exercises improves range of motion and circulation, and decreases joint stiffness," says Sheila Place, Rogerson's Director of Programs. "Another bonus: yoga is a mood-improver. Day program participants really enjoy the sessions."
Mt. PleasantMt. Pleasant Home Breaks Ground
After an extensive planning process and fundraising campaign extending more than ten years, Mount Pleasant Home in Jamaica Plain has broken ground on its renovation and expansion project. The $20 million project combines city, state and federal low-income housing funds with new market tax credits, historic tax credits, sustainable development funds, private foundation grants and private donations. Rogerson Communities is the project manager, and will help redevelop the space to house 60 frail elders. Click here for the full article by Don Powell at MassAging.org.
