Con Funk Shun was formed by high-school classmates Michael Cooper
and Louis "Tony" McCall, along with Karl Fuller, Paul "Maceo" Harrell,
Dennis Johnson, Cedric Martin, and Danny "Sweet Man" Thomas. All of
them had been playing together since their high-school days in Vallejo,
CA. Felton Pilate, also from Vallejo, joined the group after his band,
a local rival, disbanded. They found good fortune at Audio Dimensions, a
Memphis recording studio owned by producer Ted Sturges. Around this
time, he group named itself after the title of one of their
instrumentals, "Con Funk Shun." During their three-year stint at Audio
Dimensions, Sturges, besides owning the studio, was also Con Funk
Shun's producer. Their association resulted in the group's first album,
Organized Con Funk Shun. As their sound developed, Pilate and Cooper
emerged as the primary lead vocalists. Around the time their first
album for Crankshaft Productions, Inc. was being recorded, the eighth
member, MC and technician Dennis Johnson, left the group to attend
seminary in California. By 1976, the group signed to Mercury, where
they remained for ten years. Their first hit for Mercury was "Ffun,"
written by Michael Cooper as a tribute to the R&B/funk band Brick.
One of the premiere party funk bands of its time, they also began
recording ballads and instrumental tracks by the early '80s. Aside from
being the primary musicians on all their albums, Con Funk Shun also
contributed to each of their albums as writers, arrangers, and/or
producers. Burnin' Love, the septet's last album with Mercury, was
recorded without their longtime musical center, Felton Pilate, who left
the group in 1986 to become a successful producer. (Pilate eventually
became the musical force behind MC Hammer.) Melvin Carter, a frequent
collaborator of Con Funk Shun, joined the group upon Pilate's exit, and
that same year Michael Cooper left for a solo career. Con Funk Shun
disbanded after their last album with Mercury, but reunited in the
'90s, and began performing at festivals and concerts around the world. Con Funk Shun runs
for 7 performances only Wednesday-Thursday, December 15-16 at 8:00 PM; Friday-Saturday, December 17-18 at 7 PM & 10 PM; and Sunday, December 19 at 7 PM. The

Category: Nightlife Classic Soul, R&B Tue-Sat, Jan 11-15, 8pm; Sun, Jan 16, 7pm $40-45 MARTHA REEVESIn January, Motown legend Martha Reeves makes a triumphant return to the RRazz room following major tours in Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. Accompanied by her long-time pianist Al McKenzie, and a rhythm section of West Coast pros, Reeves will present an up close and personal show of her hits, along with jazz, blues and gospel selections."I love the intimacy of the Razz Room," says Reeves. "You can feel the heart of the people and see their smiles. They call "Jimmy Mack" along with me and they know all the words to the songs. There aren't many clubs like this left, so I really treasure the Razz and am honored to be coming back." Although Reeves is best known for her hard-hitting, uptempo songs, some of the best moments of her shows are softer numbers like Ellington's "Mood Indigo" or fan favorite "A Love Like Yours." The latter was written by the legendary team of Holland-Dozier-Holland as the "B" side to "Heat Wave." She hadn't performed the song for many years and resurrected it at the RRazz. It has been a staple of her shows every since. She has a few other lesser-known gems from her songbook that she plans to include on her next visit. Named by Rolling Stone as one of music's "Top 100 Immortal Artists," Reeves began her career singing at Detroit night clubs. It was while doing songs like "Canadian Sunset" and "Fly Me to the Moon," that Mickey Stevenson, head of A & R at a fledgling record company named Motown discovered her. With the Vandellas, Reeves ruled the charts throughout the 1960s with more than 20 top hits. She secured her place in history with the 1964 recording of "Dancing InThe Street." "My old boss Mickey, Ivy Hunter, and Marvin Gaye wrote the song. Marvin sang it first, as kind of a love song, but then he said, 'Try this on Martha.' I felt it differently. I had been to Rio de Janeiro and to Carnival. I had seen people dancing in the street and could identify with that, so that's what I was thinking of while I was singing. I did the song straight through in one take." Reeves is the recipient of a Rhythm n' Blues Foundation Pioneer Award, and has been inducted in the Alabama, Soul, Rock and Roll, and Vocal Group halls of fame. Neo-soul singers like Amy Winehouse and Adele sing her praises. Melanie Fiona sampled "Jimmy Mack" in her 2010 hit, "Please Don't Go." Even Mary Poppins herself, Julie Andrews, was recently seen partying at a Martha Reeves show. These ladies and audiences around the world know, as one reviewer remarked during Reeves' last stand at the RRazz, that she is "the real deal." Martha Reeves runs
for 6
performances only Tuesday-Saturday, January 11-15 at 8:00 PM and Sunday,
January 16 at 7:00 PM. The
