"Casually Chic"
June 2012

Greetings!

This is such a great time of year - an opportunity to wear our lighter-weight, brighter-colored summer wardrobe (albeit, in our area, in layers.)  But all you have to do is make a trip to the airport, or Target or just to the grocery store (don't even think about Walmart!), and you'll see many examples of casual-gone-bad.

It's a shame because it really is easy to look chic in your casual wear. The not-so-small details (like your jewelry, shoes or a scarf) take a casual outfit from so-so to smashing.

We all enjoy seeing someone who has made the effort to look their best - even when casually dressed.  Let's brighten up the world around us, one outfit at a time!

Let's face it - some of us have "Abundant Black Disorder" - w-a-a-y too much black in our closets and not enough color...

It seems like I've been coming across all kinds of nifty products lately - and this one is just in time for summer travel...

CASUALLY CHIC

Now that we're truly into the summer months and casual-wear abounds, it's important to remember that casual does not mean "sloppy". Here are some great tips for looking casually chic at your summer BBQ or while running errands, etc....

MAXI-DRESSES AND LONG SKIRTS are easy-to-wear summer style. Try topping them with a little cardi or jean jacket if the weather turns breezy or cool. They work equally well with sandals or wedges, depending on their length. A long skirt can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. If you're shorter in stature, opt for the lengthening column of the maxi-dress instead of the long skirt, which tends to break the flow of the eye from top to bottom.

JEANS work great year-round of course, whether in a classic wash, in white, or in one of the many available colored versions for summer. Try rolling up the hems just above the ankles for a different look with your sandals or wedges.

CITY SHORTS (i.e. shorts in a length just above the knee) are a great way to upgrade a casual look, especially if you combine them with a jacket in a light-weight fabric, such as linen. Pop on some coordinating accessories and you've got a chic casual-Friday look for the office.

BRIGHTLY COLORED TOPS AND TEES are fresh and uplifting for the season. You can find some inexpensive, but stylish, versions that will look great with jeans, shorts, or skirts. Combine them with a statement necklace and a stack of bracelets and you've got a totally pulled-together look with very little effort.

While we're talking about casual chic, it might be a good time to remind ourselves about how important 'fit' is, especially during these months where we're showing a bit more skin than in the colder months. As I mentioned above, we see far too many examples of casual-gone-bad this time of year, and much of that has to do with poor fit - clothes that are either too baggy (which not only looks sloppy but adds pounds, and who needs that?!), or too tight, revealing much more than most of us need to see.

Remember, even in casual wear, alterations are your friend, and clothes that fit well are the first step in upping your 'chic quotient'.

All my best to all of you!
