"Spring Trend Talk:
Run With or Run(a)way?"

March 2012
MEN'S CORNER

F Martin Ramin for the Wall Street Journal

Us gals aren't the only ones who have new trends to consider. The Wall Street Journal featured an article on shoe trends for men this spring - "Spring Shoes for Men Step Brightly."  There are a lot of, shall we say, "unusual" options coming out this spring.  My question is...who will take the bait? (Do go to the article and watch the slide show to see what I'm talking about.)

Regarding the shoe shown above - I can think of a few men I know who might consider them. However, while I love the idea of giving men more options, personally I don't see this as a trend that will take off for the majority. The article compared the shoes to that of the shoe craze from "Sex and the City", but let's face it. Women are generally always more adventurous in trying out new trends.

So what say you, men? Am I off my rocker? Would you try these out? And to the ladies - would you buy these for your significant other? Would love to hear your thoughts!

SPRING TREND TALK:
RUN WITH OR RUN(A)WAY?

Deciphering which of the runway trends work for you can be daunting. Here's a guide to help you sort out which trends you want to run with and which ones you may want to run away from this spring/summer.

Run with the floral prints you're seeing everywhere this spring. Even if you normally don't wear florals, you can choose a solid-colored item that has a few

floral accents. Plus, don't think all floral prints have to be in bright, bold colors - this season you can find them in neutral colors as well. Fortunately there are lots of options - you can go full-on floral with your dress, jacket, or blouse, or you can use the florals as accents in your accessories (lots of great choices in shoes, handbags, hair ornaments this year.) Will you run with it?

Run away from florals in pants unless you're young or super-thin.  If you're brave, you might try a small print, but in general, this look will add pounds, and I personally know very few women willing to run that gauntlet.

Run with the fabulous array of color choices that are available this spring. Truly there is something for everyone, starting with the "color or the season" (as selected by Pantone): tangerine. If that's not your cup of tea, there are lots of other bright hues to choose from: yellow, red, or shades of green.

If you're more of a pastel gal or guy, you'll find dusty pink, mint green and baby blue. (By the way, all of these colors are showing up in jeans, which is a great way to incorporate color into your wardrobe in a fun, non-traditional way.)

Of course, white is a perennial staple in spring/summer - just look at Gwyneth Paltrow at the Academy Awards, who wore it beautifully. Maybe you'll choose to wear it head-to-toe, or in a great LWD (little white dress), or the classic white shirt paired with those colored jeans. Of course, don't forget the classic combo of black and white - it's always a hit for spring.

Run away from the quirky notion of wearing sportswear items for day or even evening wear. It's a tough trend to do well and besides - let's face it - far too many people wear sweatpants as their go-to day wear as it is. Let's leave sportswear for sports and forget trying to pair your heels with your track pants. Put on your sneakers and run away from this trend!

Run with the skirt and dress length that works for you. You'll be able to find all lengths in the stores - so don't feel pressured to work with any one style. Isn't that good news? Just wear what looks best on you. (As a matter of fact, write that down and remember it as your shopping mantra!)

Run away from embroidery and/or macramé, particularly if you already wore this trend in the 70's. Teens and young girls can safely embrace this trend, but for the rest of us, think about enjoying them as accents, maybe on your accessories or shoes.

Ah...the trends! Twice a year we are faced with deciphering the current trends. And even then, while we are in the midst of deciding which of the current Spring trends we will incorporate into our wardrobes, the fashion world is, at that moment, in the throes of Fall Fashion Week.  I love both fashion seasons - Spring for it's freshness and lightness, Fall for it's warmth and elegance.  Right now, I'm enjoying the fabulous colors that are abundant, both in nature and in the stores.  I'm sure I'll be adding some of those fabulous colored jeans to my wardrobe very soon - the only question is, which color?  (A hint - you're looking at it right now!)

All my best to all of you!
