What We're Talking About: The New Harbor Group Blog
nhg blog
What happens when a competitor beats you to the PR punch? What does President Obama's comment to journalists about Kanye West say about the dangers of making off-the-record comments? We use our company blog to answer these questions, highlighting the kind of insight and helpful tips we offer to the clients who work with our team.

The blog has been a big hit, covering all kinds of current and cultural affairs, seen through the lens of our public relations expertise. We use it to talk about the issues that everybody else is talking about; politics, sports, television, technology and more, providing our unique perspective on the topics as they relate to the communications field. That includes anything from simply getting your message heard (like Benjamin Moore) to handling tough questions in a PR crisis (like Big Papi).

Check it out and leave a comment - we'd be interested to hear your thoughts and questions.

Greetings!

After telling all our clients that they need an e-mail newsletter, we've actually gotten around to starting one here at New Harbor Group.  I hope this combination of client stories, ideas and inside scoop gives you something to think about as you try to deliver your message to the people you want to reach.

Who's Getting Good P.R.?
The R.I. Turnpike & Bridge Authority and E-ZPass

Earlier this year we worked with the R.I. Turnpike and Bridge Authority ("RITBA") to make the arrival of E-Z Pass in Rhode Island a success  - an effort that paid off in a big way.  RITBA's consultants told them that two years after E-ZPass was in place they could expect to have about 25,000 customers.  But thanks to a New Harbor-engineered communications blitz in both the mainstream and social media, E-ZPass numbers went through the roof: In only six months, 61,000 accounts were opened.

It's gratifying to do such good work for a client, and it's even better to be able to quantify its value.

Building the New Harbor Team

We recently welcomed Hillary Rhodes to our team here at New Harbor. Before landing in Providence, our new content manager worked at the Associated Press in New York, where she was a multimedia reporter for feature stories and breaking news. Here are some of Hillary's stories. (The Facebook story in PC World is a good one.)

The Newton, Mass., native was also a writer for NPR's "Prairie Home Companion," working closely with its creator Garrison Keillor. She was also the founding editor of an award winning website and newspaper for teenagers. Check out the story in the Washington Post.

Hillary has a master's degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Ill.

Hillary's a smart, crisp writer who knows exactly what questions to ask clients to help us tell their story.  She's a great addition to our team.

R.I.'s Newest Bank is 89 Years Old

Huh?

Here's how it makes sense: The former Coastway Credit Union, which opened its doors in 1920, recently became the first Rhode Island credit union to convert to a mutual savings bank.  Making the move required a vote of approval by Coastway's 28,000 members. Working with CEO Bill White and the great Coastway team, I combined my campaign experience with the vast store of credit union details I acquired as public point man for Gov. Bruce Sundlun during the collapse of the state's privately-insured credit unions in 1991.

In the end, the Coastway team made it easy - they have the kind of trusting, personal relationships with their customer-members that the big places can only dream about. The final 80%-20% margin of victory was a resounding endorsement of the Coastway approach, and a tremendous vote of confidence in the team, even during some of the most troubling, anxious financial times we've seen in a generation.
