 Indiana Ministries Update

June 27, 2012 - Vol 4, Issue 13

Dan Reiland is Executive Pastor of 12StoneChurch in Lawrenceville, Georgia, and a former speaker at the Indiana Ministries Annual Meeting.  I appreciate him letting us use this article on helping people in the local church make commitments.  We all wrestle with the volunteer aspect of the local church and how commitments are not always followed through on at the level we prefer.  This article is the second in a series.  If you want to read the first one, visit www.danreiland.com.

The Commitments People Make
by Dan Reiland

How can you cultivate your congregation's willingness to make vision-centered, life changing commitments? I'm not unsympathetic to the struggles and frustrations of issues related to lack of commitment in the local church. In my own current church leadership I experience last minute cancellations, broken promises, and people who don't seem to want to "get in the game." But I remain encouraged, because this is not the norm, and people will rise up! When people let you down, remember they're human. It's because they exist and Christ died for them that we do what we do! It's up to us as leaders to look for the best in people and inspire them to a greater and more fulfilling Christ-like life. Here are several practical thoughts that will be helpful to your leadership:

Daniel and Christy KihmA calling into the mission field for a local pastor and his family

After pastoring Maple Grove Church of God in Anderson for 7 years, Daniel Kihm and his wife (Christy), have accepted the call from Global Missions to serve as missionaries to the Netherlands.  They will be commissioned this NAC.  Below are some comments and prayer requests that Daniel sent to Indiana Ministries:

"In short, this has been in the works for some time. Looking back on the past seven years, and really our whole lives, now we can see the handiwork of God preparing the way for this next assignment.  We will be working with the Three Worlds team, as missionaries in Europe & the Middle East. But our specific assignment will be to mentor and build relationships with young CHOG congregations and emerging leaders; partner with 3W ministries in the region; and support the national leadership of the Holland church."

Please pray for:

- Financial needs to be met

- Selling our home

- A smooth transition for us and our family that we are leaving behind

- Successful language acquisition

Crucial Conversations Workshop

Saturday, August 25

9:45am - 4:00pm

Church at the Crossing, Indianapolis

Space is limited, register now!

Whenever you're not getting the results you're looking for, it's likely a "crucial conversation" that's keeping you stuck. A "crucial conversation" is a discussion between two or more people where the stakes are high, opinions vary, and emotions run strong.  These conversations (when handled poorly or ignored) lead to strained relationships, conflict and dismal results.

This one day seminar teaches basic skills for creating alignment and agreement by fostering open dialogue around emotional or risky topics-at all levels of your church/organization.  By learning how to speak and be heard (and encouraging others to do the same), you'll surface the best ideas, make the best decisions, and then act with unity and commitment.

Outcomes of this seminar:

  • Foster teamwork and better decision making
  • Build acceptance rather than resistance
  • Resolve individual and group disagreements

This workshop is taught by Scott and Leisa McDonald and is for church staffs and church boards.  To read more about Scott & Leisa, click here.

Maximize the experience by bringing your entire team! Space is limited so register early to ensure space for your team.

Requirement: Read the Crucial Conversations book prior to attending the workshop.  To purchase, click here

Registration is currently limited to church staffs and church boards.  On August 6th, if space is still available, registration will open for everyone.

Cost: (includes lunch)

-  Early Bird (register by Aug. 3): $39

-  Regular Registration: $49
