History and Heritage Discoveriesdoug new
by Dr. Doug Talley

I recently received and have been reading the new book on the Church of God (Anderson) published by the Historical Society of the Church of God (authors Welch & Stultz).  (The news release on The Gospel Trumpet Years: 1881-1961 is included in this edition of the IM Newsletter and includes ordering information.)  This is the first time I've read our history since becoming a state pastor in 2005, so I am finding this book a very interesting, informative, and revealing read.  From its pages I'm gaining insight into more of the historical context that the pioneers of the Church of God lived and how it shaped their understanding of life, God, and Scripture.  I'm also realizing that the pioneers of the movement were human, just as we are.  And in their humanness they sometimes misinterpreted and/or misapplied passages of Scripture and drew erroneous conclusions to which they were passionately committed.

NEWS RELEASE - FALL 2011

The Gospel Trumpet Years: 1881-1961

Based on eight years of intensive and published by the Historical Society of the Church of God (Anderson), this book is a non-theological view of the beginnings of the Church of God (Anderson) up to the renaming of The Gospel Trumpet in 1961. It is based solidly on original documentary research - much of which could not have been done before the age of computers -and follows no 'party-line.'

Completing the Pastor's Form W-2

By Dr. Julie Nance

Tax time is stressful for everyone but especially for pastors. Their tax returns are unique because of the pastor's dual employment status. Pastors are employees of the church for federal income tax purposes but self-employed for Social Security and Medicare purposes. If the pastor's Form W-2 isn't completed correctly to reflect this dual status, it can become very difficult for them to accurately prepare their tax return.

When completing the pastor's Form W-2, keep the following in mind:
