How to Know When It Is Time to Resign
by Dr. Doug Talley, Indiana Ministries & Randy Spence, Ohio Ministries
doug new

How does a pastor know when it is time to resign?  That is the million dollar question with which every pastor of any tenure has wrestled.  What are the questions to ask in an effort to discover the answer?  What are the signs to look for?

Given the sacred nature of ministry and that, rightly understood, it is a calling instead of strictly a vocation, the matter is complicated all the more.  How does a pastor know how to read the signs?

Randy Spence
Both Doug and Randy have wrestled with this question in our own ministries and have always sought godly counsel to help us discern God's

will in such moments.  We have each lived with the concern that we stay not one moment too long or leave one moment too soon.  We have known some who should have left sooner but have remained too long because of the close proximity of retirement or due to other such personal circumstance.  Most generally the church has suffered as a result and ministry momentum lost.
