What Kind of Tribal Leader Are You?

by Dr. Doug Talley

I've recently finished reading a book that is challenging my thinking about the church. The book is Tribal Leadership by David Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright. It is not written about the church per se, but since churches are tribes (or collections of tribes) I am gaining a lot of insight into the church and the culture it needs to develop if it is going to change the world for Christ.

A tribe is a group of 20-150 people. Each tribe has its own culture (way of thinking, feeling and acting). When we are primarily part of a single tribe, like a specific congregation, we tend to overlook its culture because we are so accustomed to it. However, if you were to frequently spend time in multiple congregations (like I do), you would see more clearly how each congregation has its own way of thinking, feeling and acting. I find that often times there are even various cultural pockets with a single church (especially larger churches), yet there is an overall culture that tends to emerge.

3 Dangers Large Churches Face by Dan Reiland

I love to eat! When I was in High School I would go for a day or two without eating and never even notice. We had plenty of food, I was just busy with other things. Now, I barely go for an hour or two without being tempted by something with enough calories to add pounds just by looking at it. I appreciate a nice restaurant with quality food and great service. I love Atlanta, but it did take some getting used to "all things fried" and sweet tea so sweet it can take the enamel off your teeth. So each time Patti and I find a really great restaurant we are thrilled.

Large and small restaurants share a similar purpose. They want to serve good food, provide good service, and make a profit. But they are different in nature. Small one of a kind restaurants have different concerns than the larger "mega" restaurants, chains and franchises do. Large and small churches also share the same purpose but are dramatically different in their nature as well. I've served in churches from 150 to over 10,000 in attendance and love the different aspects of both. There is something really special about a little country church where the pastor gives his heart and energy to personally shepherd the people. And there's nothing quite like the amazing ministry of a mega-church and the size of its impact for Jesus. Both have a significant role in the Kingdom.

Emotional Intelligence Workshop

August 22, 2011

10:00am - 3:00pm

Indiana Ministries

What makes a person successful and effective in ministry?  It might surprise you that along with a vibrant relationship with God, one of if not the most critical factors has to do with the pastor's Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a model for leadership success for both the tasks we must complete and the important relationships that are critical to impactful outcomes. Many experts say that leadership comes down to two primary objectives: leading change and leading relationships.  Leading both change and relationships brings tension and complexity into the life and role of the leader. Understanding and managing the impact that emotions can have on leaders is one step that can lead to success.

The overall goal of this workshop is to improve the participant's awareness of the impact emotions have on behaviors, decision-making, and judgment. The workshop will include a valid and reliable self-assessment, a workbook, and several work tools that can be used to continue the leader development journey.

This IM sponsored training event will be led by Scott Livingston (http://www.integratei.com/).   Scott is an Executive Coach and Leadership Development expert who understands the role EI plays in ministry, as well as business and other areas.
