How's Your Emotional Intelligence?

by Dr. Doug Talley

That question often surprises people as many are not aware that emotional intelligence even exists.  We are aware of IQ which measures one's cognitive ability, but emotional intelligence?  What is it and why is it important?

Emotional Intelligence (EI or EQ) is a person's ability to understand and manage his or her emotions and the emotions of others.  Four core components of it are:

  • Understanding & being aware of your own emotions,
  • Managing yourself and your emotions,
  • Understanding the emotions of others,
  • Managing relationships in light of other's emotions.

Emotional Intelligence is rooted in brain research and relates to the limbic system, so it actually has an empirical basis.  It is almost like we have two brains - one for our emotions and one for thinking.  What they are discovering in brain studies is that the emotional brain has significant influence on the thinking brain and can even overpower it.  When it does, our ability to manage ourselves and influence others positively wanes.

Emotional Intelligence Workshop

August 22, 2011

10:00am - 3:00pm

Indiana Ministries

What makes a person successful and effective in ministry?  It might surprise you that along with a vibrant relationship with God, one of if not the most critical factors has to do with the pastor's Emotional Intelligence.

Emotional Intelligence (EI) is a model for leadership success for both the tasks we must complete and the important relationships that are critical to impactful outcomes. Many experts say that leadership comes down to two primary objectives: leading change and leading relationships.  Leading both change and relationships brings tension and complexity into the life and role of the leader. Understanding and managing the impact that emotions can have on leaders is one step that can lead to success.

The overall goal of this workshop is to improve the participant's awareness of the impact emotions have on behaviors, decision-making, and judgment. The workshop will include a valid and reliable self-assessment, a workbook, and several work tools that can be used to continue the leader development journey.

This IM sponsored training event will be led by Scott Livingston (http://www.integratei.com/).   Scott is an Executive Coach and Leadership Development expert who understands the role EI plays in ministry, as well as business and other areas.

Cost:

Pastors, Lay Leaders & Persons in the IM Credentialing process:  $60

SHAPE Participants: $25

Cost includes an in-depth EI assessment tool and lunch. You can register by clicking here or emailing Cassandra:cmichel@indianaministries.org.
