The Importance of Self-Understanding     by Dr. Doug Talley

Doug

When I first began pastoring, I assumed everyone thought like I did, processed information like I did, and made decisions based on the same criteria as I did. When tense moments would arise, I would try to explain things in a way that made sense to me but didn't necessarily resonate with people who were different from me. My understanding of myself was pretty limited, and my understanding of others was even more limited.

"Self-understanding forms the fundamental building blocks for the leader's personal development" (200, 77), says Reggie McNeal in A Work of Heart. I couldn't agree more. If any of us want to maximize our potential as leaders, then we need to develop a pretty high level of self-understanding.

How well do you know yourself? The older I get and the more ministry and life situations I find myself in, the more critical I realize it is that I have a good self-understanding.  If I understand my personality tendencies, my strengths, and my weaknesses, then my effectiveness for the Kingdom increases.  If I don't know myself well, I can unknowingly undermine the very things God wants to accomplish. During the past couple of decades I've been on a quest to maximize the gifts and abilities God has given me. As Reggie says, a critical building block is getting a good handle on who I am.

Healthy Growing Churches presents a

Conference Call Training Opportunity

Thursday, February 17, 2011

2:00 pm

"Unpacking Your Call"

Most of us spend the first half of our lives and ministry trying to maximize our gifts and, the second (most productive) fulfilling our call. So, how do you Unpack Your Call?

Your calling is wired into you by the Lord. That calling is sacred but can also be a source of pain. Often, when people are critical of you, they are unwittingly critical of your calling. Knowing your calling can protect you from regrettable decisions and can open your future.

Your calling will determine:

  • Where you will be most effective
  • The kinds of ministry you should and should not consider
  • How you "fit" in the body of Christ
  • The venues you need to fulfill your calling
  • Decisions much deeper than you think
  • Your level of satisfaction
To register, email Mimi and pay online.  Only $5 for Indiana pastors. You will be considered to be registered once Florida CHOG Ministries receives your payment.

FFF Logo3RD AND FINAL BEST PRACTICES CONFERENCE - APRIL 9TH

Pastors, we don't want you to miss out on this awesome opportunity. By attending this one day conference with at least one lay leader from your church you can become eligible to apply for financial assistance in the areas of educational loans, healthcare and/or pension.

Your church also benefits because the leader(s) that attends will hear information that can greatly affect their financial practices. All of this is possible because of a grant from the Lilly Foundation. We are in our final year of the grant, so please take advantage of this wonderful chance to apply for assistance.

Resulting from the past two Best Practices Conferences that were held, there have been 35 grants awarded and over $37,500.00 distributed to assist Indiana pastors with educational loans, healthcare and pension. Those who are participating are overwhelmed and extremely grateful for the help they have received.

You can read more about the Financial Freedom Fund/Lilly Grant by checking it out on our website. You will soon be receiving an email with registration and more information. For now, mark your calendar and recruit your lay leader (the treasurer or a board member are the most ideal choice). The meeting will last from around 8:30 or 9:00 am until around 4:00 pm at the Indiana Ministries office.

Contact Cindy Talley at ctalley@indianaministries.org for more information. Hope to see you April 9th!

Annual Pastors' Wives Retreat Coming May 13-15, 2011

Ladies, mark your calendars for a relaxing getaway with other pastors' wives just like you. Friday evening we'll gather at Camp Camby (just southwest of Indy) and will be having FREE haircuts, getting acquainted, laughing and hanging out. Saturday will offer a couple times of worship together with the bulk of the day spent in Nashville, Indiana exploring all the wonderful shops and restaurants! The annual Birthday Party will be Saturday evening. Sunday morning will be our "church" and you'll be on your way home by noon.

If you have never attended a wives retreat and you're a little nervous, please be assured that it is a very low-key weekend with no pressure...it's just a bunch of gals who like to hang out together away from the everyday stresses of home and church.
