Managing a Crazy Schedule by Dr. Doug Talley

My column title is an oxymoron of sorts. Fall seems to be the busiest time of the year
for almost everyone I know... including pastors. Every year as fall concludes, I resolve to better manage my schedule the
following fall. And every fall I fail
miserably to do a better job... including this year. Even though I have developed a master
calendar (principles and boundaries for managing my time and scheduling myself),
I violate it more frequently in the fall than any other season.
When life gets hectic and I need to regroup, I think back to
a demonstration I first saw at a Franklin Covey seminar. I didn't build enough time into my schedule
to explain the demonstration in this column, so I'm condensing the illustration
to the bottom line. (It is OK to relax
and smile at that comment.) Schedule the big things first. Determine the critical things for you to do,
and then schedule them before your life and calendar get busy. Then even if life gets a little crazy, you
are still able to maintain some balance, live by your priorities, and
