Confronting Unhealthy Communication written by special guest, Rev. Jeannette Flynn

Rev. Jeannette Flynn is currently serving as interim pastor at First Church of God, Kokomo, Indiana. She formerly served as Director of Kingdom Ministries for the Church of God.

There was a TV show on years ago that always opened with an individual who found themselves in a surreal situation that they could not escape. The host, Rod Serling, would then step forward and say, "There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone. "

Sometimes I feel like that when I get involved in congregational communication and church conflict. Not so much that I've entered into the "twilight zone" - that might be easier - but rather that I have entered into the "triangulation zone!"

This is a form of NEGATIVE communication that people practice at work, in their home, over the phone, in parking lots AND at church that is destructive and hurtful! When this practice is allowed to continue unchecked, it becomes a barrier to our congregations being healthy, growing environments where we stay focused on mission and reconciliation. Because we want to be Christ's instruments of love and reconciliation, we MUST work to retrain ourselves and our congregations not to be participants in this form of communication.
