The Main Thing Part 3: Doing Ministry or Doing Leadership? by Doug Talley
|
As a pastor, are you mainly doing ministry or doing
leadership? Most of us pastors were
trained to do ministry. That was the model in the 1900s, and it still
wields a lot of influence today. We
were trained in counseling, visiting hospitals and homes, teaching, marrying,
burying, running programs, cutting the church lawn, setting up tables,
unlocking doors, and doing all around things to serve the church and the people
in the church. (Keep in mind that
training is both formal and informal.)
The unwritten understanding has been that we are hired by the church to
take care of the people in the church.
I've heard the Ephesians 4:11-13 model of equipping the
people for ministry talked about at conferences, read it in books, heard
pastors discuss it, and even heard some sermons on it. But, frankly, I don't see a lot of it
happening. The above-mentioned
traditional (for lack of a better term) model pervades. We verbally assent to the value of the
equipping model, but we as pastors behaviorally engage in doing the ministry
for people. What gives? If pastors equipping and people doing
ministry is valid and biblical, then why don't we do it?
