Each January the
Area Administrators (state pastors) in the Church of God have a retreat. Along with discussing state ministry issues,
opportunities and challenges, we bring in an outside resource person to speak
to us. This year that person was Dr. Bob
Russell, founding pastor of Southeastern Christian Church in Louisville,
Kentucky. Under his leadership, this
church has grown from 120 to over 18,000 in weekend attendance. More importantly, this church is reaching
people for Christ and making an earthly and eternal difference in people's
lives.
Back in the
1990s while pastoring in Indy, I attended a conference at Southeastern and got
to hear Bob Russell's heart. Prior to attending the conference, I read his book
that told the Southeastern Christian Church story. I was impressed with how humble and down to
earth he was. Mega church pastors are
often unfairly labeled as arrogant and power hungry. I was
delighted to see a godly man who loved people and wanted people to experience
his Lord in a personal way.
After Dr.
Russell's second talk, he invited the group to ask questions. I inquired, "Pastor Bob, the Christian Church has no national or state offices, yet
y'all have been very effective in expanding the Kingdom by growing churches and
planting churches. How is that?"
