Goals for 2010, Part I by Doug Talley
|
Setting goals is a powerful way to turn dreams into
reality. Sometimes I hear Christians and
church leaders say they don't set goals. Reasons given often include feeling like setting goals and planning is
usurping the role of the Holy Spirit or telling God what to do. I don't find those thoughts consistent with
Scripture.
You know the
familiar words of Jeremiah 29:11 - "'For
I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you, and
not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.'" God makes plans for us. What is to stop Him from guiding us in the
planning and goal setting process?
Plans that are
specific, measurable and achievable (with God's help) are goals. So goal setting is simply listening to God's
plan and expressing it in tangible terms. It is letting Him guide us in advance rather than simply reacting to
what life throws at us.
It has been my
practice for years to set goals prior to or at the beginning of the new
year. Most of those goals are ministry
goals, but some are personal (such as work out at the gym two to three
times a week).
One of my goals
for 2010 is to better pace myself by developing and following my master calendar. Al Ells (www.leadersthatlast.org) introduced
me to the idea. It involves setting
guidelines for how I schedule my ministry and personal time so that some margin
is built in my life. Read more...
