Cogeneration Power Facilities Find Efficiency and Economics with Eco-Tec Systems

Second Condensate Polisher Implemented as Part of Alcoa's Co-Gen Facility
 Reduces Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Condensate Polisher

Eco- Tec has manufactured and commissioned its second water treatment system to Alinta Cogeneration Power Plants in Western Australia. These two of four planned cogeneration power plants are integral parts of Alcoa of Australia?s operating facility in Pinjarra, Australia, which will enable Alcoa to reduce its greenhouse gas emission by over 270,000 tons per year, equivalent to removing 60,000 cars from the road.

Alinta hired Downer Energy Group to facilitate the cogeneration project. Cogeneration is a process that utilizes one input, gas, to produce two outputs, electricity and steam. The Pinjarra cogeneration plant produces 140MW of electricity and 240 tons per hour of steam. The power is delivered to Alinta?s power consumers while the steam is directed to Alcoa?s refinery, where the condensates from the steam generated are purified and processed for reuse within Alcoa?s refinery.

Without purifying the condensates, contaminants such as iron and copper can cause corrosion. Corrosion wastes energy and reduces efficiency. The most cost effective solution is to clean or polish the condensates for reuse. As more condensate is reused, less make up water is required, reducing chemical and water consumption while also reducing overall energy requirements.

Downer Energy selected Eco-Tec to provide condensate polishers for the cogeneration power plant, based on the condensate polishers? ability to economically and efficiently purify condensates for reuse in power generation and internal processes. In addition, the selection was determined by Eco-Tec?s signature of:

~small footprint
~high automation
~reliability
~reduction in operating costs

The first Eco-Tec system for Alcoa of Australia was commissioned in October 2005, and the second system commissioned just this past October. Downer Energy confirmed the successful performance of the first system prior to the purchase of the second system for the Pinjarra facility. Each system assists in the overall efficiency of the facility.

Kruger Energy Installs RecofloŽ Water Treatment System
 Onsite Regeneration vs Service Exchange

Kruger Energy of Quebec operates the Kruger Brompton mill that produces 600 tons of thermomechanical pulp daily along with 622 tons of de-inked pulp made from recycled paper. Three paper machines produce 840 tons of newsprint daily. To increase its efficiencies, Kruger is implementing a two-phase cogeneration project:

~ First phase: the installation of a high efficiency boiler to burn paper mill sludge, bark and other wood residues.

~ Second phase: implementing a steam turbine, installed downstream from the boiler to generate electricity and supply the steam required for mill operations.

A water treatment system decision was then made to supply the boiler, as well as condensate polishing following steam generation.

Kruger awarded Eco-Tec the full water treatment system contract based on Eco-Tec's attention to customer needs and the ability to meet custom specifications at extremely competitive capital costs.

Kruger's decision process for a water treatment system included the evaluation of service exchange versus onsite regeneration. Some of the decision criteria were:

~ Capital Costs
~ Operating Costs
~ Process Control
~ Peak flow handling

The Eco-Tec difference included advanced technology meeting Kruger's specifications and integrating Kruger's common components where possible.

Eco-Tec Inc. takes the time to analyze and target customer needs, then recommends specific configurations of water treatment system components. It is this attention to detail that makes Eco-Tec?s RecofloŽ Water Treatment Systems the most advanced systems available.
