WHY:
Teen substance abuse is and has been a serious issue in Porter County for decades. The Power of Youth Council has decided to raise funds and awareness of the issue in an effort to help inspire adults to take action. Currently, in Porter County, "5.1% of 6th graders have admitted to trying ecstasy. By 8th grade the local consumption of marijuana exceeds state and national figures, and in the 9th grade 2.9% say they drink daily and that figure gradually increases to 5.2% of 12th graders who report daily drinking.", according to the 2009 Epidemiological Profile conducted by Porter-Starke Services, Inc. HOW CAN I HELP?
There are numerous ways you can be involved.
- You can be a sponsor: There are various advertisement sizes available in the event program that will go to hundreds of adults and teenagers in Porter County.
- Feed the volunteers: 60 students from our area high schools are volunteering at the event and will need lunch and dinner.
- Door prizes: Throughout the event we will be interacting with the audience and door prizes will be given out.
- Support the Power of Youth: Your United Way of Porter County pledge form offers you the opportunity to pledge all or a portion of your donation to the Power of Youth.
- Come to the event! Support programs that offer alternatives to our youth!
