Monarch Butterfly Tagging Program
Be a Kid and a Scientist!

During our Annual Membership Weekend on Saturday, September 12, professional  naturalist Wanda DeWaard will give an indoor talk at the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center, followed by monarch tagging in the fields at Cades Cove.

monarch butterfuly

Wanda has studied the metamorphosis and migration of monarchs for many years and invites you to join her for an educational and fun-filled day catching and tagging monarchs and identifying other butterfly species that may end up in your net.

Because butterflies don't fly in the rain, let's hope for a nice sunny day!  If you have a butterfly net bring it along.  And a hand magnifying lens if you have one.

Invitations to the Annual Membership Weekend will be mailed shortly.  Keep a lookout on your mailbox and then call Judy at (865) 436-7318 ext 222 to register for the weekend and the monarch program.
FDR Returns to the Park!
Sort Of...

David Keith, the Smokies' very own movie star, did a great job recreating Franklin Delano Roosevelt's ride through Gatlinburg in a Presidential motorcade during the town's July 4 parade.  You can view the reenactment in a film by Valerie Polk if you click here.

FDR

The motorcade commemorated the president's ride through town on his way to dedicate the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1940. The original FDR made his visit on September 2, 1940.

Elk Antlers in Full Bloom
The Elk are in a Rut (Again)

Ever wonder what an elk bugle sounds like?  Click here and find out.  Be warned.  It's not for the faint of heart.

Elk antlers are nearing maturity now and in another few weeks the large bulls will be using theirs to intimidate and spar with other males. Most encounters are ritualistic and involve little physical contact; only occasionally do conflicts result in serious injuries to one or more combatants. During the rut, dominant bulls gather and breed with harems of up to 20 cows.

True funny question asked at the GSMA information desk:  "How many years does it take for a deer to turn into an elk?"
