    Daffodils in Bloom

The daffodils are now in bloom in Cades Cove!

Come see these cheerful yellow flowers, now historic artifacts of the people who built their homes and churches in the Great Smokies.

    Elk Population on the Rise

The outlook for a healthy, sustainable elk population in the park continues to look good..

There are approximately 75-85 elk presently in the park and surrounding area. Exact numbers are not known since many elk are counted by sight alone.

Of the 19 calves born in 2007, twelve are living, at least five of which are female. Three adults were lost, two from conflicts between bulls prior to or during the fall mating ritual called the rut.

The last several years brought concerns that the elk population was not producing enough female calves to grow the population without importing more elk. The calves are born mid to late May, when food for bears is not plentiful.

In 2007, bears preyed on three calves. In order to help the calves become established, the park relocated bears away from the elk for the past two years. By the time the bears return to the area, the calves are big enough to escape. This practice will continue in 2008.

New!! Smokies Wildlife Cell Phone Ringtones
    pileated

How about a woodpecker sound rather than a pesky cell phone ring? Or a beautiful wood thrush instead of an annoying song?

Get the sounds of wildlife recorded right here in our park for your cell phone and feel good because you're supporting the park with your purchase.

    CCC 75th Anniversary Celebration
    CCC

This year is the 75th anniversary of the creation of the Civilian Conservation Corps.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park will host a CCC 75th anniversary celebration on September 27, 2008. The event will include talks on CCC history, displays of memorabilia, and a walk to the old Sugarlands CCC camp.

Any Smokies CCC alumni or families of alumni are extended a special invitation to attend. Contact Butch McDade at (865) 436-1714 for more information.

New! GSMNP Logo Camelbak Water Bottle
    water bottle

Extremely durable, easy to clean, dishwasher safe, and emblazoned with the folk art style national park logo (bear, tree, cabin).

Because of its ingenious construction, you don't have to tip to sip from this bottle and you need only one hand to open and close it. Its standard size top fits other bottles, too. Available in light blue in a 0.75 liter capacity.

    Spring Rains = Great Waterfalls!
    cataract falls

Waterfalls are back! Recent heavy rains have filled streams and reinvigorated Smokies waterfalls. Check out this recent shot of Cataract Falls near Sugarlands Visitor Center.

    Maple Syrup
    maple syrup
The legacy of maple syrup making in the Great Smoky Mountains is reflected in many local place names: Maple Sugar Gap, The Sugarlands, Sugarland Mountain, and Sugar Orchard Gap, among others.

This 100% pure maple syrup is bottled for us with no additives. It serves as a delicious reminder of a simpler time and place.
