The unusual climate this year had resulted in a spectacular display of rhododendron and sourwood blossoms.

The drive between Oconoluftee and Gatlinburg is particularly lovely with massive displays of white-pink rosebay rhododendron.

New Cades Cove Book Has Arrived!

Reverend Isaac Martin described the cove in 1890: "I could see the entire cove which nestles there among the crests of the great mountains. I had never seen anything quite so beautiful. Cades Cove is the dream of the Smoky Mountains."

Written by renowned national park writer Rose Houk, with 72 pages of stunning photographs by Bill Lea.

Cades Cove, "an exquiste creation . . . [that] has a strong hold on all those who have known its solitudes and its glories." Willam O. Douglas

GSMA has 4 new Junior Ranger booklets which make great gifts for children who are interested in park rangers!

For a perfect fit, the brand new books are created to engage young people in age-appropriate activities for several different age groups: 5-6 year olds, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12.

A list of the junior ranger programs, which run until August 18, is provided in the Smokies Guide, the park's free newspaper available at all the visitor centers.

Listen and Learn about Black Bears

Kim Delozier, Supervisory Wildlife Biologist for Great Smoky Mountains National Park, has recorded more than 20 short podcasts about black bears in the Smokies for GSMA.

The podcasts cover topics such as the natural history of bears, bears and garbage, bears and people, and bear bloopers.

You can find the podcasts on our website by clicking here.

Three introductory podcasts are available now. We will be loading more of the podcasts in the near future!

Bear Bloopers will come last...but it will be worth the wait. We have several hysterical true stories, for example: (1) a sedated bear waking up unexpectedly in an office at ranger headquarters and (2) a ranger glancing in his rearview mirror while driving and seeing the eyes of a bear who was sitting up in the backseat of the car!

For a book filled with useful information about encountering bears, may we recommend Living with Bears: A Practical Guide to Bear Country" by Linda Masterson. Click here to see more...

Children will love our best-selling The Troublesome Cub. It's based on the true story of a cub who climbed into a garbage can and got accidentally picked up by a garbage truck and taken on a ride to the dump! Click here to take a closer look...
