Snow closed Newfound Gap Road on April 16 and areas of the Blue Ridge Parkway remain closed due to high winds and fallen trees.

    What will happen now?

Nobody knows for sure, but some botanists think most trees will re-leaf and later blooming wildflowers will do fine.

As far as berries and acorns for wildlife food, the future is uncertain.

If you'd like some pointers on how to help the trees and shrubs in your yard recover from this shock, click here.

Record cold temperatures over Easter weekend put the hurt on Smokies trees and wildflowers.

The freeze followed record highs in late March.

Most of the early wildflowers and flowering trees were zapped, as were young leaves on trees and shrubs.

Le Conte Lodge recorded a low of 1° F., an April record.
