    The park's Annual Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage hikes, lectures, and workshops will be held outdoors all over the Smokies and inside at the Mills Auditorium in Gatlinburg from April 23-29.

    World experts in wildflowers, bears, birds, salamanders, trees, moss -- you name it -- will lead hikes and show slides and lecture on a wide range of topics.

    Secretary of Interior & NPS Director Visit Smokies

    Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne and National Park Service Director Mary Bomar visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park on March 13.

    The purpose of the visit was to invite and receive suggestions fon what special programs should be implemented between now and the 100th anniverary of the NPS in 2016.

    Volunteer naturalist Tom Harrington reports surprisingly good blooms of hepatic, spring-beauty, violets, and trailing arbutus on the lower end of Low Gap Trail.

    He even noted some spring-beauties on the Appalachian Trail.

    Around the Sugarlands, spicebush and periwinkle are blooming.
