  • Physician's Responsibility to Obtain Consent for Blood Transfusion
  • REMINDER:

How do you order a transfusion (even in the middle of the night) and always meet the requirement to obtain consent? One good practice (if you think there is any possibility the patient may need a transfusion) is to discuss blood transfusion, risks and benefits with your patient and obtain their verbal consent for a transfusion should they need one during the hospital stay. Document this discussion in the H&P, a progress note, or the preop H&P, etc. Then, if you need to order a transfusion, just tell the RN to whom you are giving the order that you have already discussed blood transfusions (risks and benefits) and documented the discussion. Direct the RN to click the box in Cerner indicating that the patient has been appropriately informed of the risks of transfusion. The RN will also assure the appropriate signature is obtained.
