In response to concerns regarding the high frequency of low-level critical value calls
regarding potassium, the current critical low value is being changed. When compared
with local peer groups that utilize the same Roche platform, it has become apparent that
Sharp Healthcare facilities have a higher cutoff point for critical calls. In order to reach a
more standardized community threshold, the current threshold for potassium will be
modified for adults and neonates:
Adult Previous Critical Value <3.0 mmol/L
Adult New Critical Value <2.8 mmol/L
Neonate Previous Critical Value <2.9 mmol/L
Neonate New Critical Value <2.8 mmol/L
High critical potassium value will not change and remains >6.0 mmol/L for adults and
neonates.
