  • A Message from Pat Sullivan MD re: Neil Farber MD (GMS Meeting, Monday, Sept 12)
  • Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I wanted to write you to personally encourage you to attend Neil's lecture in the Grossmont Hospital Auditorium this coming Monday evening. Although formally it is called a 'general medical staff meeting' it is really an informal gathering sponsored by the Happiness Committee with free wine and hors d'oeuvres beginning at 5:30 pm. SPOUSES AND SIGNIFICANT OTHERS ARE INVITED AND ARE, IN FACT, ENCOURAGED TO COME, WHETHER THEY HAVE A MEDICAL BACKGROUND OR NOT.

Neil is a friend of mine and classmate from medical school, graduating with me in the class of 1990 from the Medical College of Wisconsin. He is quite an amazing guy. Neil is a full time pediatric anesthesiologist and is a member of the Wellness Task Force for the American Society of Anesthesiologists. He is a regular lecturer at ASA annual meetings. At the 2010 ASA meeting here in San Diego, he held a discussion panel on mindfulness, gave a refresher course lecture on the same topic, and put on an ASA conflict workshop. He has written articles on positivity in the Oct and Nov 2010 issues and the August 2011 issue of the ASA Newsletter. He has published more than 135 abstracts, articles, book chapters, and teaching videos. He has lectured on positivity and conflict management at corporations such as US Bank and professional organizations such as the ASA and the WI Institute of CPAs. He is the founder of the Dynamic Health and Wellness Institute. www.DHWI.net

He not only preaches positivity, he practices it. Neil has advanced arthritis in his knees and has had High Tibial Osteotomies in both knees. Postop from both surgeries, he developed RSD, causing a burning sensation in his legs that he lives with every day and has been able to overcome using his own techniques on positivity.

He has volunteered for medical missions for cleft palate repairs in the Philippines, China, Columbia, Peru, Ghana and Israel. He is headed to Nigeria next month.

He is also a master instructor in martial arts, and holds a 6th degree black belt in Israeli self defense as well as black belts in karate and Tae Kwan Do. He regularly teaches self defense classes in the Milwaukee area and recently taught a self defense class there for over 100 nurses.

He is the backstage doctor for Summerfest, the world's largest music festival, held in Milwaukee each summer. So he's been the physician for people like Billy Joel, Elton John, and this summer, Katy Perry when she got sick on tour.

I know that going to a lecture at the hospital when we are off is not a big priority for most of us, but our Med Staff office is incurring a lot of expense to bring Neil and other speakers like him out here a couple times a year, and he is one of us, so let's try to get as many of us as possible to show up. You'll have a nice time and, who knows, might even take away some principles to improve your own outlook on things.

    Hope to see you there.
    Pat Sullivan, MD
