Medical Executive Committee Notes |
|
The MEC met on Tuesday, November 10, 2009.
I want to assure that all members of our staff are
consistently updated. Therefore, I've prepared a brief
summary
of our discussions.
- There has been good compliance with
dating/signing/timing medical records, the dangerous
abbreviation policy and titration of
medications. These issues were identified in the
most recent Joint Commission Survey. Audits over
the past four months indicate significant
improvement.
- There continues to be concern with compliance re:
signing verbal orders and telephone orders. Audits
results are in the 65+% range (an unacceptable
level).
This will very likely result in an additional four-month
audit period to ensure compliance with the JC
standards.
- Administration is currently considering prospective
Six Sigma projects. Please contact me if you have
ideas.
- All members are encouraged to check e-mail
regularly. In May the MEC approved e-mail as the
medical staff communication tool. Only peer review
documentation will be sent via US mail. Members
may want to remind their office managers to relay
important e-mail messages to them.
- This was the last MEC for 2009. The following
members will be leaving the committee and were
thanked for their service: Drs. Patrick Sullivan,
Thomas Kilcheski, Steven Allsing, Bina Adigopula,
Vincent Guzzetta, Barzan Mohedin and Kai Zu.
- Drs. Robert Bullock, Paul Dato and Jeffrey Marxen
were elected by the Active Staff members as MEC
members-at-large for the 2010-2011 term.
- Dr. Roxanne Hon and I were
recognized as Pillar Award Winners at the 2009 Sharp
Healthcare All-Staff Assemblies. It was a humbling
and gratifying experience!
- HIPAA violations continue to be a concern.
Medical staff members are reminded that they must
assure the safety of the patient data they carry with
them. Care should be taken not to leave confidential
data unattended.
- Physicians called to the ED can get help in finding
their patient by calling the lead on ext. 6165.
- 2-North (the old 2-West) has been re-opened with
20 monitored beds. The net gain since the opening of
the new tower is approximately 12 beds.
- Ambulatory Infusion has been moved to the
Grossmont Medical Terrace. All contact information
remains the same.
- Reminder: the Medical Staff
Holiday Party will be held at the Mission Valley Marriott
on Tuesday, December 1, at 6 pm - you won't want to
miss the Medical Staff Choir!
I am always happy to hear your thoughts. Please feel
free to call me anytime on 619-823-1497.
