SGH is within the window period for its tri-annual Joint
Commission survey. Continuous readiness is
always the goal. While we're confident that the SGH
medical staff is always focused on their
responsibilities, the following "top ten" are
presented as helpful reminders!
- ALWAYS wear your Sharp Grossmont name
badge!!!!
- Avoid verbal orders except, of course, in the case
of emergency - and then sign them as soon as the
emergency is over and before you leave the unit.
- Be alert to signing your telephone orders on your
next visit to the hospital.
- Be proactive in signing your partner's telephone
orders.
- Be knowledgable about the
patient's right to confidentality and practice
appropriate procedures to safeguard those rights.
- Be prepared to speak of patient safety initiatives
including the appropriate hand-off of patient care
information and the universal protocol for site/side
marking.
- Remember - all patients must
have an interval
history and physical examination on the chart
performed within the 24 hour prior to operative studies
or procedures.
- When doing an immediate post-op note, be sure
to include the "seven
elements" (date, time,
name of LIP and assistants, findings, procedures
performed and description of procedures, specimen
removed, post-op diagnosis and estimated
blood loss).
- Be prepared to speak about
performance improvement initiatives specific to your
department.
- Be able to discuss how the
medical staff is
involved in the decision-making process at the
hospital, i.e. you are represented on the corporate
board and several leadership/strategic planning
committees.
