German Vulnerabilities in a Globalizing World
What are Germany's vulnerabilities in today's globalized world? A recent joint AICGS/Institute for German Studies at the University of Birmingham conference sought to explore the collection and nature of challenges that Germany faces as a state, as well as Germany's responses to these challenges. Conference participants Frank Umbach, Katrin Auel, Roland Czada, Christian Hacke, and Dan Hough all provide their thoughts on some of the domestic issues that Germany must face.

Upcoming Event: The EU as a Global Player?
The Caucasus conflict is sending shock waves across Europe and the world. With another serious crisis erupting in Europe's backyard, the EU is challenged to prove its capacity as a coherent foreign policy actor. On August 29, 2008, AICGS, in cooperation with the Humboldt Institution on Transatlantic Issues, will hold a discussion on these issues with Markus Löning, who is the Berlin chairman of the Free Democratic Party (FDP) and a member of the Bundestag.

Issue Brief #22: A European Realignment: German-American Responses
In AICGS Issue Brief 22, Research Program Associate Kirsten Verclas describes the current German and U.S. positions on Russia, energy security, NATO, and the role of the EU, and examines the U.S. presidential candidates' views in these areas, discussing what these positions will mean for the transatlantic relationship and German-American relations in 2009.

AICGS is pleased to announce that it is now accepting applications for the DAAD/AICGS Fellowship program, sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The deadline for Spring 2009 (January 2009 - June 2009) is August 31, 2008.

2008 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship
Every year, AICGS awards the DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies in recognition of exceptional work in one of the Institute's three major areas of research. The central aim of this prize is to foster a new generation of American scholarship on Germany and encourage innovative contributions to the interdisciplinary scope of German Studies. This year's prize carries a stipend of $5,000 and will be awarded in the field of Economics; nominations must be received no later than September 12, 2008.
