The Big Gamble
Former AICGS Fellow Dr. Paul J.J. Welfens, who is currently President of the European Institute for International Economic Relations (EIIW) at the University of Wuppertal, recently wrote an article for International Economics and Economic Policy in which he argues that the leading finance centers are responsible for the shocking international crisis characterized by a loss of confidence in major markets. On March 28, 2008, AICGS will host Dr. Franz-Josef Meiers, DAAD/AICGS Fellow, for a lecture on "Crossing the Red Line? The Merkel Government and the Afghanistan Test." Preceding the NATO summit in Bucharest in early April, Dr. Meiers will discuss Germany's role within the NATO-run International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan and the continued opposition of the Merkel government to allied demands to send German troops to the turbulent south of Afghanistan. German Vulnerabilities in a Globalizing World
On March 10-March 11, 2008, AICGS, in cooperation with the University of Birmingham, UK, and with the generous support of the National Intelligence Council and the International Association for the Study of German Politics, held a workshop on "German Vulnerabilities in a Globalizing World." Evaluating EU Crisis Management in the Balkans
On March 12, 2008, AICGS hosted a discussion with AICGS Visiting Fellow Tobias Heider on "The Effectiveness of European Security Policy: Evaluating EU Crisis Management in the Balkans."
