AICGS would like to announce the recent release of the 2007 Transatlantic Trends Survey. Transatlantic Trends is an annual public opinion survey examining American and European attitudes toward the transatlantic relationship. A project of The German Marshall Fund of the United States and the Compagnia di San Paolo, this year's survey examines what citizens on both sides of the Atlantic think about a broad range of topics.

On May 2, 2007, AICGS held a trilateral conference with American, German, and Russian participants that examined German and American policies toward Russia in their transatlantic and global dimensions. Angela Stent, Director of the Center for Eurasian, Russian and East European Studies at Georgetown University, reports on the conclusions of the conference in this AICGS Working Paper, namely that the U.S. and EU need to work together harder and more creatively to find more productive ways of engaging Russia on difficult issues.

On September 18, 2007, AICGS will host a policy briefing that will make public the findings of an AICGS project concerning the German-American-Russian dialogue. This briefing will provide background information and an update on the latest developments in Russia as well as an opportunity for a question and answer session with experts on this matter. The workshop will bring together German and American media experts and journalists who will analyze the question of how the culture differences across the Atlantic influence the media's reporting about religion, immigration, and diversity on both sides of the Atlantic.

On October 9, 2007, AICGS will host Professor Dr. Heinrich August Winkler of Humboldt University in Berlin for a discussion on the idea of the "Community of Values" that bind Europe. In his lecture, Dr. Winkler, who is also the author of the recent book, "Germany: The Long Road West," will discuss the West's long path to the division of power, the inalienable rights of humankind, and pluralistic democracy.

 

 

On September 12, 2007, AICGS hosted the Minister President of Hesse, Mr. Roland Koch, for its exclusive Langhammer Luncheon Series. In an off-the-record talk, Mr. Koch discussed with invited guests foreign and security policy issues of transatlantic concern. The Lunch was made possible by the co-chairman of AICGS's Board of Trustees, Mr. Fred H. Langhammer.

AICGS is now accepting nominations for the 2007 DAAD Prize for Distinguished Scholarship in German and European Studies. This year's prize will be awarded in the field of the Humanities; the winner will be awarded at the Institute's annual Global Leadership Award Dinner on November 15, 2007. The application deadline for the 2007 prize is September 21, 2007.

AICGS is seeking an Associate Director to serve as deputy to the Executive Director with management and oversight responsibilities for the Institute's general operation and staff and in particular for the AICGS Research Program.

AICGS is now accepting applications for the Spring 2008 session of the DAAD/AICGS Fellowship Program. The program is designed to bring scholars and specialists working on Germany, Europe, and/or transatlantic relations to AICGS for research stays of two months each. The spring application deadline is September 30, 2007.
