How to Manage Assad
As the U.S. looks for partners in the Middle East, the question arises of how to deal with Syria. Jon Alterman, director of the Middle East program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies and an AICGS Policy Report author, argues that cooperation with Syria is important for the region, and that the U.S. should 'manage' its relations with Syria very delicately. This article originally appeared in the July 27 edition of The Washington Post. Mr. Alterman wrote an AICGS Policy Report on the subject of U.S.-EU cooperation in the Middle East in 2003, a subject that is still relevant today.

On August 20, 2007, AICGS will host a presentation of a unique and innovative method of political participation and mass communication developed at the Free University of Berlin and the University of Applied Science Brandenburg. "Straight2thecandidates.com" is a grass-roots project run in cooperation with students and scholars from various universities in Germany and the United States. At this event, the idea behind the website and its possible impact upon the election will be examined, as well as the role of new web-based media outlets in politics.

Event Summary: The Myths About Terrorists
On July 26, 2007, AICGS hosted an event with former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann, Senior Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy, titled "The Myths About Terrorists." At this event, Mr. Ritzmann discussed and criticized some of the most common misperceptions governments - as well as the public - hold with regard to terrorism, concluding that the solution to terrorism must come from the Middle East itself. New DAAD/AICGS Fellow: Christian Eckert
AICGS is pleased to welcome its newest DAAD/AICGS Fellow, Mr. Christian Eckert. During his stay at AICGS, Mr. Eckert will analyze the prospects and limits of the current conservative coalition in American politics with regard to social policy, using the White House's 2005 push for Social Security reform as a case study.
