Former AICGS Fellow and Der Spiegel journalist Henryk Broder recently received the Ludwig Börne Prize for his work in German-language literature. In accepting the award, Broder gave this speech in which he continually asked himself, in light of current global events, "am I crazy, or is it the others?" Former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann, currently Senior Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy, recently testified on the growing threat of Hezbollah in Europe before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Europe. Ritzmann argued that it is essential to add Hezbollah to the EU Terrorist List because it is a threat to EU interests and radicalizes Muslim communities in the EU.

On July 26, 2007, AICGS will host an event with former DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann, Senior Fellow at the European Foundation for Democracy, titled "The Myths About Terrorists." Mr. Ritzmann will discuss what really drives terrorists and why U.S. policymakers should learn what it is that propels young men from New York, London, Madrid and Los Angeles to choose to be terrorists.

On June 13, 2007, AICGS, in cooperation with Ecologic, hosted a workshop in Berlin on the topic of "Federalism in Germany and the United States: Environmental Regulatory Implications and Trends." Miranda A. Schreurs, Professor of Government at the University of Maryland, and R. Andreas Kraemer, Director of Ecologic, presented papers written for a forthcoming AICGS Policy Report that looks at this topic.

Dr. Simon Green, Deputy Director of the Institute for German Studies and a frequent contributor to AICGS, and Dan Hough, Alister Miskimmon, and Graham Timmins recently released a new book titled "The Politics of the New Germany," which aims to help gain an understanding of the politics in post-unification Germany. Dr. Green and his coauthors pinpoint three key themes of reconciliation, consensus, and transformation, and examine Germany's relations with the EU and the wider world.

On June 21, 2007, AICGS hosted a discussion on the recently published book "Demonstrating Reconciliation: State and Society in West German Foreign Policy toward Israel, 1952-1965" by Hannfried von Hindenburg.
