On April 30, 2007, the European Union, headed by Germany, and the United States will meet in Washington to discuss the pressing issues of transatlantic relations, including climate change, missile defense, and others. Reagan's Brandenburg Concerto
John Kornblum, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and an AICGS Trustee, chronicles the formulation of Ronald Reagan's "Tear Down This Wall" speech of 1987 and argues that the speech only gained prominence after the Berlin Wall came down. Kornblum also writes that there are lessons that can be applied from this experience to transatlantic relations today.  This article originally appeared in the May-June 2007 issue of The American Interest.

Hezbollah's German Helpers
Current DAAD/AICGS Fellow Alexander Ritzmann and Mark Dubowitz write that as president of the EU and G-8, Germany is in a strong position to ban Hezbollah in Europe, but so far it has squandered the opportunity to do so.  Ritzmann and Dubowitz discuss the reasons that Germany has not acted - and the risks that accompany this lack of action.  This article originally appeared in the April 17, 2007, Wall Street Journal - Europe.

Trustee Stefan Baron Moves to Deutsche Bank
AICGS would like to announce that Trustee Stefan Baron will be retiring from his current position as Editor of the German economic magazine WirtschaftsWoche and moving to Deutsche Bank AG as Head of Communications as of June 1, 2007.  The announcement below provides more details about Mr. Baron's new position.

The Third Transatlantic Market Conference
On May 13-15, 2007, the Dräger Foundation, in cooperation with AICGS, will hold its third annual Transatlantic Market Conference in Washington, D.C., on 'Growth & Security: Energy and Energy Transportation.'  The conference will convene high-ranking speakers from the German, European, and U.S. industry and political spheres to discuss this increasingly prominent global security issue.
