In an article that originally appeared in the March 12, 2007, issue of Handelsblatt, John Kornblum, former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and an AICGS Trustee, writes that Europe's outraged response to the U.S.'s hope of placing missile defense radars in Eastern Europe is more out of fear of offending Russia than a legitimate concern for the U.S.'s actions.

Angela Merkel has transformed the low expectations at the start of her term into now being the 'go-to person' in Europe.  Johannes Boege and Uta Kletzing, students at the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, offer some insights into Angela Merkel's career, personality, and leadership style in an attempt at explaining the success she has had to date in their essay, "A Manager at Home and a Leader Abroad?".

Dr. Stephen Kalberg, professor at Boston University and a frequent contributor to AICGS, writes about how the political cultures in the U.S. and Germany impact current policy in his essay, "The Influence of Political Culture upon Cross-Cultural Misperceptions and Foreign Policy." This essay previously appeared in the AICGS Advisor in English and is now available in German.

Germany and the United States have very different approaches to the challenges of securing reliable energy sources into the future. Attitudes about the use of nuclear energy, diesel, gas taxes, flex fuel, and the use of alternative sources differ, reflecting unique historical and cultural influences, as well as the impact of politics and business.  On April 4, 2007, AICGS will host a discussion focusing on assessing the prospects for finding common ground across the Atlantic to meet this global challenge.

On May 13-15, 2007 the Dräger Foundation, in cooperation with AICGS, will hold its third annual Transatlantic Market Conference in Washington, D.C. on 'Growth & Security: Energy and Energy Transportation.'  The conference will convene high-ranking speakers from the German, European, and U.S. industry and political spheres to discuss this increasingly prominent global security issue.

On March 14, 2007, AICGS was pleased to host a lecture and dinner with German Federal Minister of Finance Peer Steinbrück in Washington, DC, in cooperation with The Atlantic Times. In his speech, Minister Steinbrück focused on German-American relations and touched on Germany's improving economic climate; a transcript of his speech is also available.

On Tuesday, March 13, 2007, AICGS hosted a roundtable discussion with Dr. Gunther Hellmann, professor of Political Science at the University of Frankfurt and a DAAD/AICGS Fellow. Dr. Hellmann presented his vision of a new U.S. foreign policy based on multilateralism and argued that a more demanding kind of international cooperation would create advantages for political actors on both sides of the Atlantic.
